Reports from Kobe and Osaka indicate floods and landslides have devastated hundreds of square miles in eastern and central Japan over four days. Casualties near 3,000 with fears death toll could reach 1,000 or more, while Hyogo prefecture damage is pegged at about 100 million yen.
Arizona reports offers to search by plane and boat for the four men and two women missing on the Colorado River expedition led by Norman D. Nevills. U S Coast Guard Lt Lyons and Bert Lopez express willingness to start a search if the party does not arrive by Friday.
Butte officials reviewed bids on 18 trucks and six other WPA equipment units for a large emergency program. About 20 bids were opened with final action expected before adjournment. Total cost around 39 thousand dollars plus a convertible shovel and other gear. purchases to be paid in installments starting July 1939 with a one third down payment. Anaconda company to fund one third of the total and aid in a 93 thousand dollar equipment package to employ about 7,000 men.
Postmaster General Farley announced that earnings for the 12 months ending June 30 were the highest in the department’s history, likely exceeding the 1937 fiscal year total of 726 million. He did not release exact figures but said expenditures remained well within the budget.
Charles E. Aspling a pioneer resident and noted printer publisher and mining man died this afternoon in a Deer Lodge hospital where he had been a patient since January. Born January 24 1854 at Parksville Missouri he moved to Montana in 1864 living in Virginia City Alder Gulch and the Last Chance mine in Helena. His father Thomas Aspling started a Deer Lodge newspaper in 1866.

Mexico City July 6. President Lazaro Cardenas signed a contract with W. R. Davis of New York for the sale of ten million dollars worth of expropriated Mexican oil. Davis’ Mexican representative William F. Flanley announced the agreement, closed last night.
