Nearly 15,000 more Montana electors qualify to vote in the July 17 primary than in 1932. Secretary Sam W. Mitchell reports 247,248 eligible voters after county tallies, with 146,038 casting ballots in the last primary. Registration shows a decade of growth except for one year.
The Montana relief commission, which handled 17 million dollars of federal funds in just over a year, seeks a new administrator to replace Thomas C. Spaulding who announced immediate resignation. State Senator E E MacGilvra also severed ties with the agency, while Dr W J Butler of Helena, state veterinarian, was named Spaulding's successor and confirmed by federal FERA field man John Carmody.
Butte police continued probing the Gaylord Reppy service station slaying as they questioned two men yesterday and hunted for new leads. Quinton Brownell was sent to federal officers on an internal revenue charge after questioning. Ray Hannigan remained in county jail for further investigation.
Washington notes warn of unrest in Germany as United States Ambassador Dodd challenges Foreign Minister von Neurath over handling of Dawes and Young plan debt payments. A delivery driver for Montana Hardware was beaten with a brick or rock and kicked by six men outside the McGrew Machine Shop on Utah Avenue yesterday afternoon. The assistant driver fled to help as the assailants fled after finding the victim on his feet. The injured man was taken to a hospital. police were not notified and no arrests were made.
President Roosevelt completed a long vacation journey across Puerto Rico arriving at sunset in San Juan. He paused before the city hall as a cheering crowd surged toward his automobile after traveling from Mayaguez for about ten hours.
American sailors from the Wyoming and Arkansas sparked a night of violence in Nice, damaging cafes and fighting locals. A Arkansas crewman was shot in the throat by a Nice detective, another seaman suffered a fractured skull, and twenty Americans were arrested as naval police struggled to tame the unrest. Shore leaves were canceled and the 850 midshipmen aboard two battleships remained aboard.
Mrs. Myrtle Lattimer, about 55, was jailed in Seneca, Ohio, as officers probed her claim she hid her mother's death two and a half years ago and cremated parts in a stove while continuing to collect a $40 monthly Civil War pension. A trunk and many boxes of purchased items, including 52 dresses, were found at the isolated house. The case was investigated after rumors persisted and a bank stopped cashing the pension checks.
Secretary Ickes let 4000 Public Works and Interior employees go early to lecture on breaking etiquette at work. He cites drones and unbranded mavericks rushing at 3 30 p m and urges extended time to exit and avoid mayhem. Special amplifiers were used for those outside and the secretary apologizes for packing staff like sardines.
Hoodlums disrupted Belmont mine power by tossing a wire across high voltage lines causing a ten minute outage. A crowd of about 500 gathered as electricians repaired the lines amid rock throwing. police halted several would be attackers including women ready to throw. Authorities warn such wire t hrowing risks electrocution.
In Montana the western region will see showers and cooler temperatures while the eastern part is partly cloudy. Saturday brings warmer conditions in the far east with generally fair weather on Sunday and cooler air in the extreme east portion.
Helena July 6 A building in Livingston described as the home of Calamity Jane was condemned as a fire hazard by State Fire Marshal Neil Flaherty. The structure is run down and insanitary, lacking doors and windows. Calamity Jane, famed gunwoman of the West, lived in Montana mining camps in the 1860s.
Silver Bow County shows a general fund balance of 37 921.84 as of July 1 with salaries and expenses paid from that fund. Expenditures last month totaled 42 125.61 while receipts were 9 124.37. June balance was 70 293.08 and total funds amount to 155 441.04. Other funds include poor 23 077.74 road 20 590.87 bond sinking 15 965.85 and motor vehicle 10 645.57 with June expenditures 103 096.36.
