Rail bridge rebuild begins after June derailment collapse

Crews prep to rebuild a railroad bridge that collapsed near Reed Point and Columbus, dumping rail cars into the Yellowstone River. A second public meeting is set for July 6 at Columbus High School Gym and via Zoom. Over 12,000 pounds of asphalt recovered. cleanup extends 240 miles downstream. Wildlife monitoring continues after a second dead animal, a garter snake, was found. Public can drop off recovered material at Holmgren fishing access site.

Firefighters handle summer blazes in Butte during July Fourth period

Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department logged 19 fire calls from June 27 to July 4. A camp trailer on Cowdog Lane was a total loss after flames engulfed it before crews arrived. Officials reported no injuries and noted deck gun aid from a firetruck. A total of nine grass fires occurred, five from fireworks, along with six trash fires, two vehicle fires, and one structure fire.
