President Nixon steps into steel contract negotiations in Pittsburgh urging a noninflationary path. Officials say the aim is to curb wage demands while keeping prices steady ahead of talks for 540,000 workers in nine major firms.
Daniel Brian Mackey twenty two of 522 North Main died Sunday in a motorcycle crash in Yellowstone National Park. He was born April 6 1949 in Lewiston Idaho and was a Butte High School football standout and Eastern Montana Yellowjackets player. Wake services are Tuesday at 8 p.m. and funeral Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St Mary Church, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
The Associated Press reports five highway deaths in Montana within 24 hours marred July 4th weekend. Victims include 19 year old Teca Zimmerman of Billings and 55 year old Maynard Kitzman of Minot, plus others in Lodge Grass Creek, Ovando, and near Many. The national toll stood at 581 dead by p.m. and Montana’s total lags behind last year’s 147 on this date.
Anaconda copper leach dumps threaten Clark Fork River but control engineer John Spindler says lime treatment, supplied by non-striking crews, neutralizes acidity. He notes over 1,000 tons of lime used to protect Mill Creek and Willow Creek downstream, and reports crystal clear waters despite past red flows during the 1967-68 strike.
The criminal conspiracy trial of Edward Grady Partin enters its fourth week as closing arguments approach. Partin is charged with violating the Sherman Act for conspiring with Ted F Jr to monopolize Baton Rouge concrete business through Louisiana Ready-Mix owner Dunham. A key witness Wade McClanahan testified about sabotage carried out for Partin.
Nearly 100 entries and about 25 000 spectators filled Buttes Honor America Parade on Granite Street. Gov Forrest Anderson and Rep Richard Shoup attended along with city officials as floats bands and drill teams from Anaconda and Butte showcased community spirit under sunny 60 degree skies.
Winners in Butte's Honor American Day Parade were announced from multiple categories. Grand Prize went to Economic Development Administration with numerous prizes for Commercial Floats, Organization Floats, Youth Organizations, Decorated Cars, marching units, and out of town entrants. Best dressed western division winners include Jim Cramer and Butch O'Connor.
Chief Justice Warren E. Burger urged lawyers assigned to indigent defendants to stay with the case through appeals. He argued against appointing new counsel for appeals and said this would reduce time and costs while maintaining quality at the Supreme Court. He noted the court handles about 4,000 appeals annually, far more than in earlier decades.
