The Fourth of July celebration in Butte drew an estimated 30,000 spectators as residents and visitors saluted the nation. Weather ranged from 64 to 70 degrees with near ideal conditions. The official party included Congressman Arnold Olsen, Mayor Thomas F. Powers, Sheriff Bil Dalling and County Commissioner members.
Mrs. Fred B. Bustle, widow, returned from Independence Day parade to find her two story home two miles away in smoldering ruins. Firemen suspected gas explosion caused the blaze. the uninsured residence stood near barns as volunteers from Rocket Fire Dept fought the flames.
Parade winners posted for Butte Copper Capital and Silver Bow County with prizes of 75 dollars each. Winners include Ian, Bob Richter Sr. and Jr., Bill Kambich and Ed Leonard. Fire incident near Miles Cross prompted aid for Mrs. Bustie. Rocker volunteers plan a benefit. Floats and bands from Anaconda Helena Whitehall Dillon Sheridan Deer Lodge impressed crowds.
The Associated Press reports eight violent deaths in Montana over the extended July 4 weekend. One additional fatality occurred on private property from a vehicle-train collision. Drowning claimed three lives, two retired men who slipped into the water. A southeastern Montana private plane crash killed one young man and injured his twin. State patrol bolstered enforcement and urged daytime headlights as a safety reminder.
The 76 hour holiday period from Friday 6 p.m. to Monday midnight recorded 435 traffic deaths nationwide with 518 deaths in the four day span since 1963, while California, Ohio, Texas and New York alone logged over 130 fatalities in crashes.
An explosion at a $12 million nuclear experiment center in Cambridge injures seven researchers from Harvard and MIT. Four students remain on the danger list as authorities say volatile liquid hydrogen used to fill a bubble chamber caused the blast.
A single engine Taylorcraft plane crashed near a ranch north of the Wyoming border in southeastern Montana, killing Larry Brimmer, 19, of Biddle. Brimmer suffered fatal injuries. another boy was injured and hospitalized as the crash occurred during practice takeoffs and landings. The FAA and Sheriff Gatlin investigated. cause and pilot identity were not released.
The 5th annual meeting of the veterinary medical association convenes at the Filomen Hotel with members from across the nation. Dr. Don Spangler of Atwater Minnesota, president elect of the American Veterinary Medical Association, spoke at the opening dinner as Dr. Robert Painter of Helena acted as toastmaster. Tuesday morning session chaired by Dr. O J Halverson of Helena features further speakers.
Dominican Republic figure Porfirio Rubirosa, known for multiple marriages and a diplomatic career, died in a car crash near Paris. His gray Ferrari clipped a parked car and struck a tree, with emergency responders unable to save him at the hospital.
Today through Wednesday expect fair skies and warmer temperatures. Butte highs near 80 and lows around 47, with similar warmth east and west of Divide. Tuesday temperatures vary 75 to 85 in the north and 80 to 90 in the south, with mixed Tuesday night lows.
