Butte marked its territorial centennial with July 4 events ending Sunday night. The Butte Municipal Band conducted by Ray Sims performed an hour of music, Aubrey Edwards as manager. A large crowd cheered with car horns as fireworks began after 10:30 and improved later, though many left before 11:30.
Two young men died in separate Montana highway crashes over the July Fourth weekend. Terry Pyette, 19, of Milltown, died east of Missoula in a high speed crash, while Chester Eide Ill, 17, of Fort Peck, perished when his car struck a railing and crashed into a bridge. The toll for the holiday reaches six, with Montana’s year total at 120.
Mostly fair conditions in Butte and Anaconda with a warming trend. Highs reach 75 in Butte, 68 to 78 west of the Divide, and 70 to 90 in central areas. A fatal crash on U S Highway 2 near Milk River Bridge killed Eide. three others injured, including Lee Pyette’s brother, Krum, Sherman Mass, and Pickerin.
About 30 residents fought a mob of around 1,000 teenagers and college-age youths on July Fourth weekend in West Yellowstone. The crowd toppled fences and signs, vandalized, and attempted to haul away a foreign car before being stopped. Gallatin County authorities described a large bonfire plot in the summer resort town near Yellowstone National Park.
An Associated Press tally shows 445 people killed in highway crashes since 6 p.m. Thursday as the 78 hour Fourth of July weekend ends. The 1960 three day peak was 442, with California reporting 73 fatalities, the worst since 1951 Christmas. A head on collision near Bowling Green Missouri killed eight, while a Michigan crash near Suttons Bay claimed five. Towns faced vandalism against fire crews and property damage as youths, many 15 to 20, faced various charges and jail time.
Nearly 100 Naval Reserve officers and men from Montana and Idaho arrive for a one day training conference in Butte. Capt David W Davis Jr and Lt Cmdr A L Gauvin Jr will outline the program as high ranking officers arrive from Omaha and the West Coast. The city has hosted a Naval Reserve Surface Division since 1946 despite not being on the coast.
Police used clubs dogs tear gas fire hoses and electric cattle prods to rout thousands of youths in Fourth of July riots from coast to coast. About 200 were arrested and several officers injured at Newport Pleasanton Garnett and Alameda County Fair.
In Jackson Mississippi NAACP officials and staff crossed color barriers by registering at two downtown hotels and a motel and attending a white movie theater. National board members Dr. H Claude Hudson Kenneth Guscott led the action arriving at the Heidelberg and Sun Sand Motel with plainclothes detectives present.
Livingston reports quote Charles R. Lee denying claims pro gambling groups would skip Helena convention. The Montana Independent Development party aims to nominate governor candidate Lee, who wants a quick session to finalize ballot placement. Lee announced candidacy after anti gambling forces asserted a November initiative.
Fire crews halted a fast moving 12800 acre brush fire in Southern California after four days of fighting across foothills canyons and mountains. Helicopters dropped water as bulldozers narrowed the flames toward a highway. No homes were lost and crews from Los Angeles County, California Division of Forestry, and Angeles National Forest aided.
Republicans led by Goldwater supporters flood San Francisco to set a united platform. Rep. Melvin Laird chairs the platform committee as hearings begin, with a big convention opening next week and focus on a Goldwater ticket and vice presidential possibilities.
