Butte Bridge Collapse on Casey Street Shocks City

A wooden bridge over Silver Bow Creek in the 1200 block of Casey Street collapsed around 4 a m Thursday. Resident Hugh Haughian reported a crash woke his family before finding the bridge down. City officials and Mayor Vern Griffith cited an overweight load as the likely cause.

Kennedy Eyes Tax Cut Postponement to 1963

President Kennedy said he would consider an immediate tax cut but plans to defer any reduction until 1963. He noted the economy would guide a change this year, while promoting a $4.9 billion foreign aid program and Medicare for the aged. He urged bipartisan support for both bills and stressed the Alliance for Progress.

Sheridan Receives $64 000 Grant for New Ruby Valley Hospital

Officials announced a $64 000HEW grant for a nine bed hospital to be named Ruby Valley General Hospital in Sheridan. Senators Mansfield Metcalf and Rep Olsen said Hill Burton funds will fund the project replacing the Sheridan Emergency Hospital with a total estimated cost of $160 000.

Dillon and surrounding consumers won a new 23 cent per quart milk price after a four year clash with Montana Milk Control Board. Attorneys Carl and Frank Davis say local distributors moved to free market pricing, while restraining orders against the board persist and the battle continues.

Weather Outlook in Butte Area Mostly Cloudy Showers

Forecast calls for mostly cloudy conditions with showers and thundershowers in the Butte region. East of Divide expects highs near 67 with lows around 39, and a cool trend into Friday and Friday night. Saturday sees partly cloudy skies with scattered thundershowers southeast and few showers northwest. Temperatures: highs 65 to 75, lows 35 to 55.

Senate Acts To Calm Sugar Furor

The Senate moved to spare 150000 tons of premium price sugar for Latin American suppliers to ease a diplomatic dispute. Lawmakers also debated financing health benefits for the aged via higher Social Security payroll taxes, with a GOP leader blocking limited debate. The sugar measure, worth about 15 million dollars yearly, passed by voice vote and was sent to the House.

Montana Toll Rises as Two Drownings Reported in Holiday Fatalities

Montana's Fourth of July holiday toll climbs with the death of 14 year old Dennis Jepperson of Lodge Grass after a head on collision near Hardin. Two drowned men from Columbus Ohio, Ancil and Edgar Adkins, are found in a livestock reservoir near Baker and may have drowned earlier.

Cascade County authorities said no inquest will be held into the Wednesday auto death of Jack Lee Lykins 22 of Lykins who died in a head on collision near Armington Junction southeast of Great Falls Coroner Charles Magner and County Atty Gene Daly found no criminal negligence by Bruce Donald MacRobbie 19 of Great Falls the other driver involved.

Babcock names Calvin Robinson to Education Board

Gov. Tim Babcock appointed Calvin S. Robinson of Kalispell to the State Board of Education and University Regents, blocking Acting Gov. Paul Rice who sought the appointment in the governor’s absence. Robinson, 42, a lawyer and former Democratic committeeman, replaces Dorothy Byrne who died earlier this week.

Traffic toll hits 155 on nation’s Independence Day

A record 155 people died on U.S. highways during the Independence Day period, the National Safety Council calling the toll a needless waste of human life. Late casualty reports pushed UPI figures beyond the previous 137 deaths recorded for a 30 hour July 4 holiday in 1956.

High Altitude Nuclear Shot Stated Today

US forces monitor Johnston Island region as an unannounced high altitude nuclear test is set to occur between 11 p.m. and 2:30 a.m. HST amid improving weather. Clouds may obscure Hawaii observers while a Coast Guard report notes a potentially suspicious vessel inside the prohibited zone. Russian hydrographic ships and a submarine contacts also reported near the test area.
