Helena AP reports the Montana State Board of Equalization announced a record 50,099,407 in state tax collections for the 1960 61 fiscal year ending June 30 1961 up from 46 466 104 the prior year. Motor fuels taxes led with 19,812,190 and withholding taxes rose 1,973,594.
James R Hoffa steered through a 30 percent salary hike from 50000 to 75000 for the Teamsters leader and approved an unlimited expense account. He blocked a move to put re election to a member referendum next December. The convention approved measures to extend pensions to officials of adopted unions and to restrict rank and file from holding future convention offices.
Mrs Eliza beth Gerry widow of County Commissioner Willis Gerry is appointed by District Judges T FE Downey and John B McClernan to fill his seat. He died June 2% after a long illness at age 56. Her term lasts a little over a year, with primary nomination in June 1962 and potential election in November 1962. Gerry was a Democrat and the first woman commissioner in Silver Bow since 1954. Her residence is 623 Elm. she has children William LeRoy Betty Jo Gerry and relatives in Butte and Montana communities. Board members include Chairman Frank Gorsh and Gene W Daly.
Four members of a Caldwell family were severely burned in a trailer explosion and flash fire early Wednesday morning. Kenneth Lawrence 40 and his wife Margaret 32 suffered first and second degree burns. two younger children Sherrie 16 and Mary 14 were sleeping at the Colton home nearby. Police theorize a bottled gas range ignition sparked the blast while the family prepared breakfast en route home from Yellowstone. The interior sustained scorch marks and a rear panel blew out as firemen and neighbors aided victims.
City Council introduced a new driving ordinance at a Wednesday session. The measure includes motorbikes in the definition of a vehicle and tightens carelessness standards. Aldermen approved library rest room funds and faced routine financial items and budget timing notes for 1961 62.
Montana forecast splits into east and west zones. East will see scattered afternoon and nighttime thunder showers mainly west and south Thursday then most areas Friday afternoon and evening, with cooler southwest Thursday and highs 75 to 85. West region expects afternoon and nighttime showers and thundershowers Thursday through Friday, cooler Thursday, with highs 70 to 80 and Thursday night lows 45 to 55. Table notes that maximums cover 12 hours and minimums 18 hours ending 5 p.m. MST Wednesday.
Ted C. Busha, Big Timber city clerk and water commissioner and former Sweet Grass County police chief, was critically wounded by a rifle shot shortly before noon at his home. He crawled to his garage and called for help as a 30-06 was found in the basement. his condition remained critical hours later.
The Associated Press reports the Independence Day weekend set a record for holiday deaths. Traffic, boating, drownings and other accidents pushed total holiday fatalities above 900, with traffic deaths surpassing 500 and eclipsing the 491 mark from 1950. The Memorial Day toll stood at 462, keeping the 706 traffic deaths record from the 1956 four-day Christmas observance intact.
Israel announced a successful 80 kilometer high multistage Shavit II rocket flight to study weather in the stratosphere and ionosphere. Prime Minister Ben-Gurion watched as solid-fueled craft released sodium powder to create a radiating cloud, marking a nonmilitary national achievement.
French military authorities report 18 soldiers died when their truck was swept away by a flash flood in western Algeria on Monday. The incident occurred as heavy rains hit the region, prompting swift river and road washouts.

A thunderstorm interrupted the July Fourth display atop Big Butte causing an hour early start. The $2,500 show lasted about 40 minutes and drew praise as one of the best in years despite the weather.
Raymond J. Crowley reports that U.S. employment rose to 68.7 million in mid June, a new record, while unemployment increased to 5.6 million. Teenagers boosted the labor force by entering or remaining in the job market, with 900,000 added to the unemployed and about 1.6 million youths securing jobs. The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 6.8 percent, with long term joblessness around 1.6 million and 32 million nonfarm workers on part time due to slack demand.
Two fires in Deer Lodge National Forest burned about six percent of heavily wooded area during Independence Day weekend. The larger blaze near Race Track Creek Drainage started Monday afternoon at 3:30, expanded to about three acres, and was contained by Tuesday evening after aerial retardant drops. Lightning likely caused the fire. A smaller one near East Fork Reservoir, 18 miles south of Philipsburg, covered about 1.5 acres and was contained by Monday midnight with 10 men and air drops aiding mop-up.
The body of Henry Many Feathers, about 25, of Cardston Alberta, was found Wednesday in St. Mary's canal five miles north of Babb. Coroner Edward L. King said the body was taken to Great Falls for pathologist examination to determine the cause of death. Feathers had been missing since June and was found in the same area as a previous Cardston man.
