Rioters in Kielce Poland killed at least 38 people and wounded about 50 in a pogrom that erupted after an eight year old boy claimed Jews kidnapped him. Police and militia restored order with armed cars, amid continued violence in city and surrounding areas.
Senator Taft warned in the Senate the new fiscal year deficit could reach 12 billion dollars accusing the Truman administration of hypocrisy on inflation. He cited wage increases and spending proposals as fueling inflation while criticizing price controls and budget projections. He estimated expenditures at 36 billion and income at 31.5 billion, with already authorized spending totaling 47 billion and a 12 billion deficit ahead.
Bettie Christian a 17 year old girl in Columbus Indiana was released from a proxy marriage after Circuit Judge George E Long granted an annulment. Wayne Harrison stood in for Frank Clark who was jailed at North Vernon awaiting burglary sentence. Clark later received a two to five year term in the state reformatory.

Counsel for Joachim Von Ribbenstrup argued the Potsdam pact recognizes Germany as a nation and only Germany may prosecute war criminals, aiming to clear Von Ribbentrop in the International Military Tribunal. Officials at Fort Missoula deny a mass break attempt after a week of unrest ends with fires and a tunnel discovery. Col. J J France says a small group set fire to wooden barracks housing 40 inmates, with one prisoner knifed and another beaten, injuries deemed serious but no escape plan confirmed. Ray Rankin, 50, a laborer, was charged with assault in a tavern shooting that left Louis T. Gray, 34, in serious condition. Gray said Rankin fired four times after an argument over fixing a tire. two shots hit and Rankin was arrested in the Great Northern yards after an 18 hour search.
