Walter H Daems a Whitehall resident and Army private was killed in action June 9 on Luzon Philippines while serving in the infantry. He had been overseas eight months. Born in Varney August 31 1919 he lived in Ennis and Whitehall before joining the Army. Surviving are his wife Myrtle and two children Nicholas and Donabee of Whitehall his mother Hazel of Ennis grandfather H B Daems a Varney pioneer a brother Edward in Europe and uncles in Butte.

Hailstorm strikes Miles City causing heavy damages
A severe hailstorm in Miles City caused estimated damage of 15 000 to 20 000 dollars. The storm destroyed the Arthur Brothers Circus tent, shattered over 1 600 greenhouse panes, damaged three PT-17 training planes at the airport, and damaged roofs across fairgrounds, businesses, homes, gardens and vehicles. Improvements Under Way as Scouts Prepare to Open Camp
Vigilante council Boy Scouts open a four week summer camping season at Camp Lowlands on Sunday with more than 50 boys in the initial week.
