The nation counted 354 deaths last night as it prepared to end two day Independence Day observances. Midwestern states led with 86 deaths including 35 drownings and 30 auto fatalities. Fireworks caused eight deaths, and the toll in lakes and rivers was the largest.
Representative Evans charged the farm board faces broad GOP criticism. He cited Vice President Curtis and Senators Capper and Watson as leading the charge against the board’s wheat handling policy. Since the board limited monthly sales to 5 million bushels, Republicans urge keeping wheat off the market longer.
George Von Elm of Los Angeles and Billy Burke of Greenwich, Conn., each shot 149 in a 36 hole final to force a second 36 hole playoff for the 1931 national open golf championship at Inverness Golf Club Toledo. Von Elm, wearing an aluminum cast, sank a 10 foot putt on the final hole for a birdie three to again tie Burke after leading then losing the lead.
A federal investigation into the Deer Lodge plane crash that killed Victor Dolan 29 and Ervin Evans 17 starts today. A Department of Commerce officer heads from Ogden Utah. Dolan hoped to fly home to Woonsocket South Dakota to surprise his parents. His brother Roy Dolan will bury the body in Woonsocket. The biplane crashed from 150 feet after taking off from Rock Creek airport during a rodeo flight. both men burned beyond recognition.
Rome July 5 The government of Italy and the Vatican avert a break after a decision by Pope Pius XI and Premier Mussolini. The pope says the church suffers persecution while the state pursues its path. About 150000 copies of the encyclical were distributed in Rome with more to come.
One man injured as three fires strike last night. Watson Drug store at 1017 Fast Mercury street suffered a blaze of undetermined origin with damage estimated over 15000. Firemen from Butte and Arizona Street stations battled the flames for over an hour, threatening nearby blocks and dwellings. Automobile fire on Anaconda highway extinguished by the driver. United Press reports President Hoover’s debt holiday plan, near acceptance by nations since Friday, was delayed Sunday night. Hoover rushes from his Rapid City camp to Washington to study Paris’s latest communication once seen as a basis for acceptance but now deemed unsatisfactory. Mellon receives new instructions to Paris to push talks while Berlin signals willingness to concede to France on the major obstacle of German reparations scope.
In Hamilton on July 5 two sisters Daisy and Bessie Wolfenbarger rescued Mrs. Joe Hart after a bridge on the Bitter Root river collapsed. Bessie, 15, reached the woman first and the older sister helped drag her to shore. All escaped unharmed.
Directors of many large American corporations worry that employees who bought stock on installment during a boom were misled. As market prices fell, workers face rolling weekly pay deductions for shares paid years ago at higher values. Morale suffered despite initial gains, and firms reconsider whether to compensate losses or place part of the burden on employees.
Construction starts on a large refinery at Port Jerome on the Seine, 120 miles from Paris, for Societe Franco-Americaine de Raffinage, linked to Standard Oil of New Jersey. The plant should be operational early in 1933 as France shifts to refining imported petroleum domestically due to new duties and laws. Other foreign oil firms are pursuing or planning similar facilities in France amid the policy changes.
One third of the nation s copper and one sixth of world copper production come from the mines of Butte Hill a key Montana source.
A large Butte Elks delegation led by Floyd Fluent boards the Northern Pacific Montana special for the national convention in Seattle. Over 80 members with wives join Elks from Dillon, Bozeman, Livingston, Helena, Great Falls and Missoula. other delegates travel on the Olympian. James A Farley travels with party as South Dakota and other state contingents ride separate trains. Local leaders say Butte will be strongly represented and publicized at the convention.
Butte boys depart for Camp Lowlands and girls head to Camp Castle Rock as Montana hills host summer outings. Periods run July 5 to 19, July 19 to August 2, and August 2 to 16 with limited second period spaces. Improvements include new dining hall and shower facilities, heating plants, and updated equipment at the 160 acre Scout ranch.
ARICA Chile July 5 reports say loyal Peruvian troops fought rebels in a last stand at Cuzco. At least four people were killed in the clashes across the border.
New York July 5 Miss Liberty of New York Harbor will receive a lamp treatment to remove shadows and age blemishes from the statue. The ceremony includes incandescent floodlights added to the crown jewels and 21 windows, with a blinker system to make the statue glow. The project, costing over 30000 dollars, includes a new elevator and overall renovation overseen by Maj. Gen. Hanson E. Ely, guardian of the statue.
A forecast for Montana shows warmer conditions on Monday followed by warmer temperatures on Tuesday across the eastern portion. East Montana is expected to stay mild with improved daytime highs and light winds. Stronger warming trends center on the eastern counties, with a gradual cooling to follow later in the week.
Lakeport California July 5 Six persons were killed when a Travelair mono plane on an excursion flight crashed into a canyon near Clear Lake. Among the dead were three prominent California golfers George Ritchie Leon Keller and Jack Kerrigan. Pilot William Hoffman also perished and Mrs Sigmunda Lax of Long Beach died ten minutes after being found unconscious. The cause could not be determined with no witnesses. The plane was brought in by Hoffman for short pleasure trips.
A Missouri Pacific freight train struck a truck ten miles east of MʻAlllen Texas killing three people instantly and injuring a fourth. The deceased are Mrs. R. A. Yaws 50 Juanita Yaws 15 and Adrian Blancet 12. FR A Yaws the truck driver survived with injuries.
A powerful bomb damaged the Howard street terminal yards injuring no one, as pieces of iron shattered windows and tracks. Police say two other bombs were prevented from exploding by timely arrival of workers. All three devices were lit at the same time.
Chicago July 5 The Overland Limited arrives without Peter Arno or Florence Rice Smith, neither registering at Chicago hotels or taking a New York train. Arno and Mrs Smith reportedly left at Wheaton after rumors of a marriage, ending a feud sparked by an alleged Reno platform clash with Cornelius Vanderbilt Jr. The conductor describes no platform fight and notes Vanderbilt and guards confronted Arno with a black jack, narrowly missing a porter. Both Vanderbilts have sued for divorce.
