Crowds estimated at more than 40 000 watched the Independence Day parade closing Fiesta Days 75th year in Butte. The event featured a western parade the annual rodeo and the dedication of a new 2 000 000 four lane highway west of the city plus Crazy Daze sales. Weather was perfect with morning fog cleared by parade time.
Berlin reports a Red Polish commission with life or death powers launched a sweeping inquiry into the Poznan revolt. Premier Cyrankiewicz appointed the panel which heard workers’ evidence on causes of last week’s violence, and summoned Poznan officials over charges of cowardice and negligence.
Arab sources in Jerusalem accuse Israel of concentrating troops near the Jordan-Israel armistice line. Israel denies the charges as fabrication. A Jordan military spokesman notes concentrations near Jerusalem and says Jordan’s army monitors the situation. Beirut reports similar alerts and Lebanon’s government calls for Arab readiness. Saeb Salam tells parliament he must attend urgent talks on national safety as the session is suspended.
Judges Alice Miller Bill ONeill and Dave Cohen named winners across categories. Grand prize of $250 went to Meader ville Volunteer Fire Depart ment. Most Patriotic honor to South Side Athletic Club $150. Organization group prizes included City of Butte Recreation Depart ment and Butte Council Knights of Columbus $150 and $75. Other winners were Butte Miners Union $50 Main Cash and The Met $150 Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Co $100 Prudential Federal Savings and Loan Assn $75 Ivan's Market $50 and Junior Division Miners Union Youth Center $100.
Crowds applauded as floats and marching units rolled past in a vibrant parade. Decorations spanned the color spectrum, reflecting a festive mood for the large undertaking.
Butte and Silver Bow County residents will meet July 10 at 8 p.m. in the Webster-Garfield School auditorium to discuss community planning. The event is announced by T S Veazey Jr, chairman of a temporary steering committee formed after May 28 City Hall meeting called by Mayor Tim Sullivan to address growth and mining expansion. The group invites participation from individuals and organizations, with 36 groups already represented on the committee.
The Northern Pacific Railway warned of a near failure in crops for eastern Montana and western North Dakota as of July 1. Below normal rainfall since Aug 1955 and high early June temperatures threaten yields, with total grain tonnage 20 to 30 percent below 1955. Some western Montana and parts of North Dakota and Minnesota report excellent crops, but most areas face poor prospects.
While attending a fire sale in San Jose, Harold Schaeffer’s North Hollywood furniture store was engulfed by flames. No injuries reported. The cause under investigation as investigators assess the scene.
The Associated Press reports rapid traffic deaths as Independence Day draws near full speed homeward. Within 24 hours of the 30 hour holiday, 71 deaths were counted, plus 27 drownings and 14 miscellaneous fatalities for a total of 112 violent deaths. The period runs from 6 p.m. Tuesday to midnight Wednesday local time.
William R. Johnson 21 is dead after a car crash six miles south of Absarokee near Columbus. Kenneth C. Clawson 30, injured, was driving and survived a week earlier crash that killed James E. Moore 24. Highway toll climbs to 120 for year with July Fourth fatalities. Both men, smelter workers from Anaconda, had rooms at 707 E Third.
Anaconda smelter workers vote 1,302 to 830 to support the Mine-Mill union No 117 as bargaining agent in a two day NLRB election conducted at the Anaconda Reduction Works with 2,627 eligible voters. Howard E. Helbun supervised ballots in Seattle.
Free bus service from Park and Main to Columbia Gardens for kids under 14 starts at 9 30 a m on Thursday for the weekly Children’s Day at the recreation center. Town buses run to 4 p m. Several hundred children expected if weather cooperates. staff say last week drew the largest turnout since summer program began.
Partly cloudy conditions with scattered thundershowers Thursday afternoon and increasing activity Friday. East area highs reach 70 to 75 north and 75 to 85 south. west region warms to 70 to 80 with showers mainly in the north and clouds spreading across the state.
A month-old baby, Peter Weinberger, was abducted from a carriage on a terrace in Westbury New York. A ransom note demanded $2,000 in small bills by 10 o'clock the next day or the child would be killed. Nassau police and about 50 detectives investigated, with neighbors told to stay indoors as authorities searched for leads. The case echoes the 1949 disappearance of 3-year-old Stephen Damman from East Meadow.

A Fourth of July crash near East Glacier on U S Highway 2 claimed three lives including James Thompson, 16, and William Langman, 22, plus an 18 to 20 year old girl. The fatalities raised Montana’s 1956 highway toll to 119 with two more deaths in Wolf Point where two cars collided near Highway 13 leaving one teen dead.
Gen. Nathan F. Twining said his Moscow visit confirms Moscow produces more military aircraft than the United States and is closing the gap in quality. He will report to President Eisenhower at Gettysburg and hold a White House news briefing later Thursday.
