The three day Fourth of July weekend ends with 368 traffic deaths at 10 p.m. MST plus 221 drownings and 124 other fatalities, totaling 713 violent deaths nationwide. Records compare to 1952 and 1950 benchmarks, as Ned Dearborn urges motorists to curb the toll.
J Russell Wiggins of the Washington Post accused the Department of Health, Education and Welfare of secrecy over the Salk polio vaccine. He said lack of candor damaged public confidence when defects and difficulties emerged, causing a public shock and call for candor in early program stages.
Four year old Stanley Johnson of Forsyth climbed a substation fence and touched 33 000 volt lines. He died at a hospital four hours after being found by a nearby resident. Parents Mr and Mrs Merle Johnson mourn the tragedy in Rosebud county.

A 36 year old Montana woman, Marion Lubbe Smiley of Eden, died when her car collided head on with a second vehicle two miles south of Harlowton on Montana Highway 19. Her husband Vernon Smiley and three daughters Nancy 10 Elaine 6 and Betty Ann 3 were hospitalized in serious condition. James C Alexander 30 of Melville also was injured. The five other traffic deaths over the Fourth of July weekend included Carol Lynn Bouchee 3 of Livingston and Ramond Apodoca 11 of Frazer, raising Montana 1955 road toll to 95 with a note of higher fatalities compared to last year.
John J. Magill and his daughters Arlene Jean 15 and Sharon Kay 14 of Butte escaped drowning when their car slid into the Big Hole River Sunday. Rescuers Lee Wulf and Ray Hole pulled the family from icy water. Sharon suffered a fractured collarbone, others cut or shocked. Mrs Magill stayed in Anaconda with family.
The Indian Red Cross said three former corporals Lewis Griggs Otho Bell and William Cowart from Texas Washington and Georgia will be handed to British Red Cross at the Hong Kong frontier for return to the United States. They had chosen to stay in Red China then changed their minds. Seventeen other Americans in Korea remain in China.
Senate Republican leader Knowland warns the Soviet may seek a neutral bloc between the Iron Curtain and the West at the Geneva Big Four meeting. He says Eisenhower and Dulles will resist attempts to neutralize Germany and urges free elections supervised by the UN or Big Four to ease East European tensions. He cites past Soviet breaches of treaties.
Red Boss Nikita Khrushchev, visiting the U S Embassy in Moscow for a Fourth of July party, declared Russians want an honest basis for the Geneva summit and denied plans to attend the Big Four meeting with broken legs. He warned against reading weakness into Moscow’s readiness to negotiate and said the Soviet Union can wait if talks aren’t serious.
Retiring Foreign Aid Director Harold Stassen told Congress Western non strategic trade with Communist countries rose 24 percent in the past year. He warned prospects for a further increase in 1955 look dim and that overall trade may even decline. He cited Japan’s 1954 gain in non military shipments and Russia’s 7 percent rise in meat and food imports amid an agricultural crisis.
Premier designate Antonio Segni moves toward forming a new government for crisis battered Italy. He faces Liberal opposition while negotiating with four parties as he reports to President Gronchi by Tuesday on his cabinet prospects and past farm reform record.
Thousands filled sidewalks for Butte's Fourth of July parade while Old Glory fluttered, a hailstorm briefly paused Front Street, and the event highlighted American ideals amid a cool, overcast night. The Butte High School Band led the procession to the Civic Center before the storm ended and spectators returned to daily life.
East Montana shows partly cloudy skies with scattered showers or thunder showers in the north and west and rising temperatures into the 60s to mid 80s. West Montana remains mostly cloudy with continued thundershowers and cool conditions through Tuesday and Wednesday.
Meaderville Volunteer Fire Department won the grand prize of 250 dollars for a parade float in Butte’s Fourth of July event. Top commercial prizes went to Met Tavern 150, Prudential Savings and Loan 190, and Butte Beer 75, with others earning 50 to 25. Junior Division honors included VEW Drum and Bugle Corps first, Silver Bow County 4 H Club hayride second, and a tie for third between Camp Fire Girls and Girl Scouts. Awards also planned for two junior bicycle entrants.
In Hokkaido Japan the flood toll reached 76 dead or missing with an estimated 32,000 left homeless after 36 hours of heavy rain. Rivers breached dikes isolating communities as 72 houses destroyed and 7,000 more flooded. U S Air Force helicopters assist in rescue and delivery of food and medical supplies.
Butte police continued their search for two autos stolen from the Mining City. A 1940 Plymouth with license 1 12474 was taken from Copper and Main, reported by Joe Vigil and Tony Jaramillo. A 1949 Mercury with license 19872 was reported stolen from 323% N. Washington, by Louis Frazer.
A two year old girl Ida May Curtis missing overnight near Libby Montana was found alive and uninjured. Investigators said there was no bear involvement and the searches in heavy rain concluded she wandered away from a family camp. Deputy Sheriff James Reedy and Sheriff Ray Frost noted no marks on the child and a doctor said she was in perfect condition.
Mrs Helen Meyer Gronfein of 407 West Broadway dies after a lengthy illness. Funeral from White's Funeral Home Thursday at 2 pm with burial in B nai Israel Cemetery. Survived by husband Harry and three sons, plus siblings and many relatives across Montana, California and beyond.
