A 4000 strong crowd watched a spirited sports program and band concert at Naranche Memorial stadium as Butte’s 1946 Fourth of July celebration concluded. Thousands joined a parade, baseball game, and Mining City band concert in sunny, safe observance honoring veterans of the global conflict.
Americans around the globe marked the 170th Independence Day, with peacetime celebrations at home and military displays by US occupation forces in Europe and Asia. The Philippines gained independence after 48 years under the American flag as President Truman proclaimed the act.
Ellsworth Wisecarver a 16 year old dubbed dream man by two married women remains at large after fleeing a juvenile detention home with four other delinquents. He previously eloped at 14 with Mrs Elaine Manfredi 22 mother of two and his 16 year old partner in a later elopement with Mrs Eleanor Deveny 25 mother of two.
Mother Nature provided a lightning and thunder display over Butte during the Fourth of July observance. Although no official pyrotechnics were planned, spectators who stayed up late saw a jagged flash show starting about 11 10 and lasting roughly 15 minutes. A brief shower accompanied the storm and indoors proved safer to enjoy the spectacle.

A gas pipeline blast near Peru Illinois on July 4 killed five welders and left ten injured, one in critical condition. President Truman and Mrs. Truman spent a quiet Fourth at Shangri La Maryland rereading swimming and loafing in the Catoctin mountains.

In Kuna Idaho a two day community harvest on 75 acres of Lawrence Ritchie farm saw 60 volunteers gather clover hay. Ritchie was injured and his wife with two children were killed in a June 9 auto accident. Mora Grange and Latter Day Saints organized meals and support.

The Senate banking committee approved a compromise bill to restore price and rent controls until June 30 next year amid a partisan clash. Taft criticized its broad OPA discretion while Barkley called it workable, as Porter reshaped the measure to repeat most provisions but alter two Taft and Wherry amendments. The plan then heads to the floor for further debate.
Lt. Col. John C. Herbst 36 a leading army ace in the China theater with 27 Jap planes to his credit died from injuries after his P 80 jet crashed during an air show near the San Diego county fair grounds. He died at the Naval hospital. Herbst commanded the 445th fighter squadron and had been with the first fighter group at March Field after fifteen months in combat in the Orient.
Fort Missoula prisoners set fires in several barracks in a short lived escape attempt on Thursday. Capt. C. B. Ford said fires were put out in minutes with only one building badly damaged. No inmates escaped as guards were alerted after a prior incident in Watsonville, California. State of alert continues at the post.
The American Medical Association tentatively chose New York City for its 1949 meeting, with Atlantic City as a backup. Dr. Olin West of Nashville Tenn was named president elect to take office in June 1947. The House of Delegates also re elected Dr. R W Fouts as speaker and re elected several officers.
A July 5 report states the atomic blast over Bikini lagoon on July 1 killed 300 rats, 10 pigs, and 10 goats aboard the Burleson animal ship, with more animals on target ships totalling 3,101 rats, 150 pigs, and 150 goats. Scientists say most deaths came from blast and heat, water exposure was less lethal.
The Soviet government newspaper Izvestia accuses Britain of fueling bloody events in Palestine and pursuing anti Arab imperial policies in the Near and Middle East. It criticizes Foreign Minister Bevin for trying to hide behind the Soviet Union and labels Britain as dominating other peoples and undermining regional peace.

The Big Four foreign ministers ended a 74 hour session in Paris with an agreement to convene a 21 nation peace conference on July 29 to approve instruments for Italy and other Axis satellites. They settled the deadlock over Italian reparations, allocating Russia a $100 million claim and laying out a seven year payment plan drawn from current Italian production.
The diary excerpts read in the war crimes trial show Emperor Hirohito opposed Manchuria expansion but kept silent to avoid militarist wrath. Entries from Sept 22, 1931 describe army policy clashing with central authorities and the emperor’s reluctance to speak on Manchurian policy.
