Philippines Campaign Declared Over by MacArthur
General Douglas MacArthur announced that the Philippines campaign, begun October 20 with the Leyte landing, is virtually closed. Prime Minister Curtin Dies in Sleep at 4 A.m.
Prime Minister John Curtin died in his sleep at 4 a m Thursday after a long illness with heart and lung conditions. Acting Prime Minister Francis Forde announced the death in Canberra noting Curtin had to withdraw from the United Nations conference in San Francisco. Born Creswick Victoria he rose from union work to lead Australia and served during the war economy and peace efforts.

SAN FRANCISCO July 4 Japan said American warships shelled Karafuto the Japanese half of the Sakhalin island near Asia’s coast on Monday and Tuesday. A submarine attacked both days and five warships bombarded Shikuka on the Bay of Tarika. Tokyo claimed the bombardments caused no damage.

Flames Destroy Sugar Beet Seed at Great Western Plant
A fire at the Great Western Sugar company warehouse in Billings destroyed six to seven carloads of beet seed. The blaze started by spontaneous combustion around midnight and burned more than 12 hours before containment. No injuries, but workers and prisoners of war suffered smoke effects as crews moved seed stock to clear space for firefighting efforts.
