Gov. Roy E. Ayers announced Montana’s budget is balanced for the first time in twenty years, saying the general fund opened the new fiscal year July 1 with about 30 000 dollars in balance after erasing a prior red ink of 944 571.03 dollars. He credited economy and strict tax enforcement for wiping out the overdraft.
Robert Russell, 12, vanished with his stepfather while fishing headwaters of Pintler creek in the Anaconda Pintler primitive area. Authorities and a search party, aided by farmer Cleo Seofield, resume at daybreak as sheriff Barney Larsen organizes a posse. Last year Joe Hipp disappeared in the same wild region.
A man named Frank Chore told hospital staff that his friend did it after he suffered a five inch deep scalp laceration and several smaller cuts. He was found on South Main Street by police and taken to a local hospital where his condition was not serious.

Estes Park Colorado July 4 bloodhounds led into a second night of search for four year old Alfred Beilhartz missing since 8 a m yesterday in Rocky Mountain National Park. His mother feared he had been attacked and killed by a bear though park officials said drowning remained the strongest possibility. Park Superintendent David H Canfield said a river diversion would be attempted to widen the search along the Roaring river bed near the confluence with the Fal river.
The long Fourth of July holiday left at least 449 people dead nationwide. New York led with 37 deaths, autos caused 225 fatalities, and incidents included crashes, drownings, shootings, and fireworks accidents. States such as Montana and Pennsylvania reported specific deadly events while overall counts lag behind last year’s 563 fatalities.
Richard Gleason, 21, spent the Fourth rescuing children from Des Plaines river floods. He pulled a 16 month old from the water and later saved two 13 year old boys at another river point.

Mrs. Edward Hartman of Bozeman Montana was killed when a Union Pacific train hit the car driven by her husband Hartman 38 a Bozeman auto parts representative. He is in critical condition at Mammoth Hospital Yellowstone National Park with head injuries. Sheriff C Van Clark said the car failed to see the train traveling about 45 miles an hour and Hartman likely did not observe it. Mrs Hartman was taken to Bozeman for burial with no inquest planned.
Antonito Colo July 4 A L Hunt 58 Denver was found safe at a sheep camp miles from the river after his companion E R Wakefield also of Denver drowned when their boat capsized during a turbulent trip down the Black Canyon of the Rio Grande.
A forecast for Montana and Wyoming predicts unsettled conditions Tuesday and Wednesday with probable local thunderstorms and little change in temperatures.

At Floyd Bennett airport Howard Hughes the millionaire sportsman flyer completed a one stop transcontinental flight preparatory to a transatlantic hop to Paris. He elapsed 13 hours 38 minutes from Bank California to New York and 7 hours 16 minutes from Wichita to New York. He said he would likely depart for Paris in a week or two and would decide on a world flight after reaching Paris.
