In Danzig July 4 reports spread that German troops began a march to seize Danzig. The city buzzed with fevered talk after Dr. Arthur Karl Grieser, president of the Danzig senate, told the League council that Danzig seeks to break from league supervision.
Washington July 4. Government plans to aid farmers leaving five drought struck western areas were announced by Harry L. Hopkins head of the works progress administration. Families will be financially helped to resettle in regions with better farming prospects. The program blends WPA and Resettlement Administration with jobs for impoverished farmers and funding for cattle, feed and grass seed. Details on amounts and relocations were not disclosed.
Chicago July 4 The Midwest endures an intense heat wave as the critical period for major food producing acres nears its end. Temperatures reach 100 to 110 across the drought area from the Rocky Mountains to Illinois with Lincoln Nebraska at 100 and Iowa around 100. Chicago stays cooler with a forecast high near 96 aided by a lake breeze.
A firecracker started a blaze that destroyed half of Remsen Iowa's northern business district and 20 homes. Fire ran out of water at one point, dynamite was used to check the flames, and authorities said a girl playing near a cafe tent set the fire but would not be held responsible. The fire was controlled about 8 30 p m after a fresh water supply arrived.
Thousands from near and far watched two days of celebration for Butte’s 160th anniversary of Independence. Sam Treloar’s Butte Mines band opened with a concert before a grand finale of fireworks lighting Big Butte. Crowds, cars, and ground shows filled the night as the city relived early century revelry.
The League of Nations, ignoring the Italo-Ethiopian crisis, set up a special committee to monitor gravest developments in the Free City of Danzig. It asked Britain France and Portugal to follow the situation after Dr. Arthur Karl Grieser announced a German demand for status revision on behalf of the German people.
In Geneva the League of Nations Assembly shied away from two Selassie requests for financial aid and non recognition of Italys conquest of Ethiopia. It adopts a three point steering committee resolution urging non recognition in broad terms and calls for new proposals to strengthen the league. Ethiopia votes against the three point measure and against the loan while 44 support it with four abstentions.
President Roosevelt hailed the Glacier-Waterton park on the Montana border as proof of strong US Canada ties. He said the cross border playground reflects harmony and goodwill and expresses pride in ongoing friendly relations.
Butte Camp Fire Girls begin a week long camping session at Georgetown lake with the first group arriving by noon. Over 160 girls registered by last Friday and further enrollments bring the total as three one week sessions run through July.

Butte officials reviewed the holiday toll noting one death, multiple injuries, and widespread incidents. Sherman Cummings, 47, a motion picture operator, died after a head on collision near Meaderville. Anaconda men C Callan and Eric Swanson remain jailed with minor injuries, Bill Swanson has a broken leg and head laceration.
The Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions on Sunday and Monday with continued warm temperatures.

Seventy seven motor deaths across 27 states and 25 drownings near lakes and rivers marked the day, with two men burned in Minnesota and single deaths in Michigan and Virginia. A Remsen Iowa firecracker fire threatened a cafe.
