Kingsford Smith and three companions complete a world flight returning to their departure point. Thousands greet the crew as the Southern Cross lands in Oakland on July 4. A clogged oil screen forced an emergency landing while the aircraft completed the journey.
GREAT FALLS MONTANA July 4 4 This city on the site of Montana s first Fourth of July observance recalls 1805 when Meriwether Lewis and William Clark spent Independence Day at the Great Falls. A parade of floats traces the trail blazers from pioneer days to present, showing growth and future hopes as the falls power mines mills and industry. R G Bailey of Lewiston Idaho a Lewis and Clark Memorial association representative spoke on a Lewis and Clark Memorial highway to be built within five years with 56 miles remaining under federal aid.
The weather bureau provided a glorious Fourth for Butte residents as townsfolk celebrated the nation's natal day with decentralized observances. Crowds filled horse and dog tracks, buses carried passengers to events, and Columbia Gardens hosted a sizable share of 154th independence celebrations. Nearby cities sent visitors, and Butte residents returned the hospitality, while some joyriders disrupted nerves with fireworks.
In Wrigley Kentucky a long running family feud erupts in a general store. George Gross 60 and son Bert 18 are killed. Clarence Whitt is shot in the head and seriously wounded and Rufus Whitt is stabbed. Rufus likely to die. Customers seek cover as guns and knives clash.
Sparta Illinois brothers John and Kenneth Hunter landed at Sky Harbor Chicago after 553 hours 41 minutes aloft setting a new record, despite a clogged oil screen forcing an early descent at 5 21 39 CST. Crowds cheered as the City of Chicago refueled and the pair spoke of the achievement and risks.
Wing Commander Charles Kingsford Smith and the Southern Cross touched down at Oakland airport at 2 36 p m ending the global circumnavigation begun May 31, 1928. The crew included John Stannage J Patrick Saul and Everet Van Dyk. They crossed the North Atlantic from Ireland to Newfoundland before a New York entry on June 26.
Flames gutted a two story frame building at 235 East Park Street during Butte's Fourth of July observance. Discovered by motorists, the fire spread rapidly interiorly and through the roof before firefighters arrived. Police lines were needed as a crowd of several hundred gathered. It was the third blaze in the same building in four months.
In Anaconda on July 5 a Pearson Lumber camp employee Jack Antilla, 45, was found dead about 100 feet from his cabin. Andy Varnaspaki is jailed on murder charges, with John Hill and Emil Hine also held on drunkenness charges after being with the men Thursday night.
New York July 4 The flaming body of Henry Brinkman an ex convict was found on a quiet Bronx sidewalk dumped there by unknown underworld enemies who shot him in the head A taxi driver saw a bundle of rags burning outside a stone yard and houses Police traced Brinkmans movements to within hours of the finding but could not identify a likely crew or persons involved
Nine Butte residents were treated for Independence Day injuries yesterday. Seven suffered car crashes, one hurt by a firecracker, one by a campfire, and none faced serious injuries. Two of four fires were linked to firecrackers.
A fire of undetermined origin swept a quarter mile of Boston waterfront destroying hundreds of thousands of feet of lumber and thousands of tons of coal. Damages were estimated between 750000 and 1000000 dollars as coal pockets smoldered and lumber piles cracked after the first of five alarms. The blaze started in a blacksmith shop behind Pacific Coast lumber yards on Mystic creek and spread rapidly. A head on collision between automobiles, allegedly driven by Willard Hartman, is noted.
July 4 in Echo Lake near Anaconda. Ed Hensley of Anaconda drowned after cramps while swimming. James W. Uncles and Hugh Cooley rescued him, but a passing boat capsized as others tried to help. Hensley leaves a widow and infant child.
The Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions Saturday and Sunday with slightly cooler warmth on Saturday. Expect dry skies, light winds, and rising afternoon temperatures across the region.
Bucharest July 4. Within 10 days the divorce decree separating King Carol II and Queen Helen will be annulled by the Romanian courts. Legal proceedings begin next week. The chief plea is the written protest of King Carol's lawyer at the time the decree was pronounced. Carol declared he did not recognize the divorce.
Four young girls died when two small boats carrying 13 people overturned and sank in Colyell bay near Baton Rouge Louisiana. Others swam or were towed to shore as rescue efforts continued. (Continued on Page 2)
Independence Rock Wyoming hosts 2500 participants including Boy Scouts officials Indians and cowboys in a covered wagon centennial marking 100 years since the Oregon Trail opening. The event features Indian tom-tom drumming a noon ceremony and a pow-wow from Fort Washakie as part of a multi day tribute to pioneer history and westward expansion.
Dr and Mrs BR C Monahan and daughter Evelyn of Butte escaped injury when their car was pushed from a highway on the Evaro hill 18 miles west of Missoula and dropped about 30 feet before striking a tree 200 feet from the canyon bottom. Mrs Monahan had a cut above the left eye and was taken to a Missoula hospital by passing motorists. The family was en route to Swan Lake for the weekend and planned to continue today.
Chicago July 4. Endurance flight statistics show the Hunter brothers logged 553 hours in the air with 223 refueling contacts. They consumed 7630 gallons of gasoline and 400 gallons of oil in the mission. Potential rewards total about 200000 from concessions, prizes and testimonials. The Stinson-Detroiter cabin monoplane built in 1928, previously flown 650000 miles in transport, carried Wright J-6 300 horsepower engine with 700 hours in the air prior to the endurance flight.
At Bellaire speedway Texas on July 4 a holiday crowd watched 17 balloons enter the 1930 national race to select the US entrant for the Gordon Bennett trophy. Lieut T W G Settle and aide R G Mayer launched the navy craft at 6 05 p m after a 6 p m pilot launch. the balloon drifted north as the crowd bid farewell.
Physicians and surgeons who attended multiple health and medical meetings in Montana have left the city after four days of conference work. Hotel clerks and local doctors confirm their departure and note impacts on office hours while doctors resumed private practice.
