Pilots Roy L. Mitchell and Byron K. Newcomb push the City of Cleveland toward a new refueling endurance record. They must stay aloft past 12 10 a m Saturday to exceed the 172 hour 32 minute 1 second mark, with notes sent about fuel needs and weather.
Grand Haven Mich July 4 ten people drown at a municipal beach as wind lashed waves and a strong undertow pulled bathers from Lake Michigan One group of four was swept off a pier while nine others were carried out The dead include Mildred Fifield 19 Robert Schindler 19 Julius Tusch 19 Leonard Kellogg 20 Carl Rohloff 21 Walter Schwartz 19 John Giddings 21 Frank Petrowski 40 Rudolph Pitulck 22 and Erwin Pitulik 21 The Pitulcks were from Detroit and the others residents of Grand Rapids Michigan Witnesses saw nearly all drownings but Schwartz and Giddings were found missing hours later after a ride from Grand Rapids.

Harrison project workers resume solicitation aiming to raise 10 000 for paving Harrison avenue, long seen as a city eyesore. Butte Chamber donors responded Wednesday while many automobile owners have yet to send in their contributions, all urging timely checks to finish the drive and proceed with the paving work.
Ottawa reports the Chicago Tribune plane An Tin Bowler landed at Remi Lake on the first leg toward Berlin. Radio messages suggest it may be near Rupert House at James Bay, with Hope's Advance receiving signals after 3 PM. Officials think the aircraft is airborne to get weather reports from Fort Burwell station.

Two Viennese nobles, Louis Wendikheim and Baron Mario Ecmen, were severely wounded in a cavalry saber duel in Budapest. The duel followed strict formalities and they were sent by Vienna express after treatment to avoid Hungarian penalties for dueling.
The Fourth was celebrated in Butte with fireworks, flags, picnics and dancing as residents joined a parade of activities. Many traveled to Dillon with the Butte Mines band for Beaverhead county’s grand Fourth celebration and thousands joined the three day events in Anaconda.
Ben Mahr of Billings Mrs Mahr and Miss Betty Miske are in Butte guests at Hotel McLeod. The trio is detained while sheriff probes why a newlywed couple and the sister rode a Montana boxcar. Mahr claims a Toppenish Wash job and to be saving carfare. The two women are kept with other inmates. Mahr is jailed on the ground floor cage.
A 10 year old boy, James Phalan of 21 West Park Street, suffered a four inch gash to his left cheek from a lit firecracker placed inside an empty beer bottle during Independence Day celebrations at midnight near Butte. He was treated at St. James hospital and released. Several others sustained minor injuries in automobile accidents across the region, with incidents near Anaconda and Philipsburg. Two Missoula girls also suffered leg cuts in a Ford coupe mishap.
In Shawnee county Oklahoma a farmer was killed and another wounded after a gun fight with a federal prohibition agent during a liquor raid near Tecumseh. Harris, 35, died in hospital after claiming he was shot by the agent. Oscar Lowery, 34, is identified as Harris’s brother in law. The agent was held in Tecumseh jail.
Alberta Shorney, 23, was beaten and mutilated by an unknown assailant in Jackson while her infant slept nearby. Her husband Howard Shorney, 25, found her body in a downstairs living room after a brief errand and was held for investigation.
At Plaszow station near Krakow 19 people were killed and 35 injured when a locomotive struck a stationary passenger bag in foggy conditions late last night. The crash occurred at the rail yard near Cra cow and prompted emergency responses from local authorities.
William Q. Kay, about 25, of Tirwood, Calgary, Canada, was burned to death in a crash near Marshall on July 4. Continued on page 2.
Two Butte residents marked Independence Day abroad. State Senator Thomas J. Walker cabled from Rome that Hotel Russie offered a splendid celebration. Judge J. J. Lynch was at sea near Ireland aboard the steamship Regina with his son John Emmett. they planned to observe the holiday aboard ship and then meet in Dublin for a tour of Ireland after visits in County Cork. The Regina was due to dock at Queenstown today.
President Hoover spent the Fourth quietly at the White House grounds then moved to the south portico to view the capital fireworks display. Earlier he did office work and saw a Potomac Park youth baseball game while Senator Harrison of Mississippi delivered the principal Independence Day address.
Former president Calvin Coolidge marked his fifty seventh birthday in Northampton Massachusetts on July 4. He kept to routine receiving telegrams letters and cards and making a morning office visit. He later sat on his porch and shared a slice of a large birthday cake from New York. He commented that the Fourth of July felt unusually cold.
In Butte yesterday the city police launched a search led by Chief Jere Murphy for two attractive female bandits suspected of stealing a car near Anaconda and fleeing toward town. A Good Samaritan, J G Pearson, had his car stolen as the girls jumped in after stopping to aid stranded motorists.
