Four year old Paige Nash of Salinas California watches a giant firecracker fuse burn quickly. She remains unfazed as the cracker is a dud. Authorities warn others could be hurt over the long weekend if firecrackers cars and other dangerous items are not used with caution.
Five people died in Montana over a violent weekend as the Fourth of July holiday began. Michael Don Becker of Great Falls in Missoula died from internal injuries after a motorcycle crash, raising the state traffic toll to 124. Richard D. Flint of Missoula died when a forklift tractor struck by a switch engine, with Grover Roberson of Power and Randy Ethridge of Cascade drowning in farm ponds nearby. Adolph Novak of Schuyler, Nebraska, also died from injuries in a June 9 highway crash near Salmon Lake, totaling five new deaths amid ten traffic fatalities in 24 hours.
The Independence Day period sees at least 163 traffic deaths since Friday 6 p.m. EDT, with New York and California leading. The National Safety Council warned the final toll could set a new record, as the three day holiday exceeded prior estimates and past holiday weekends.
President Johnson announced that 1,400 U.S. troops will be withdrawn from the Dominican Republic, following recommendations by the inter-American force commanders. He ordered two battalions of the 82nd Airborne Division to leave as Santo Domingo’s truce conditions improve.
Partly cloudy weather dominates in Jha, Butte Anaconda, and western Montana with scattered thunderstorms and gusty winds. In Santo Domingo, U S officials announce an orderly withdrawal beginning next week reducing troops to about 10,900 from a peak of 22,000, while a high level advisory committee on international monetary affairs is created.
U S and Vietnamese forces scored heavy setbacks for the Communists in air and ground operations. Ten Americans were wounded as Marines rushed into the Qui Nhon area and fought a Viet Cong attack with no American casualties. Navy jets from USS Independence hit the Qui Hau ammunition depot near Hanoi with direct hits and secondary explosions.
Logan Utah police report the prime suspect Owen H Kimball 27 was found dead in Logan Canyon near Spring Hollow about four days after he disappeared following a call to his wife. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause of death with no weapon found at the scene.
UPI report notes Montana State College President Roland Renne defeated incumbent Tim Babcock for governor in 1964. A 1965 Americana copy lists Renne as governor in the Governors of Montana entry, volume 19, page 386.
The 55th Montana Veterinary Medical Association meeting opens Monday at the Finlen Hotel in Butte drawing leading veterinarians nationwide en route to Portland for the AVMA meeting. Hosts include Dr. Harry Furgeson of Mount Haggin Livestock Co. in Anaconda and a Tuesday visit to Mount Haggin Ranch.
A turtle wandered in the 100 block of North Excelsior prompting a resident to report a plate sized moving object in her yard. Police delivered the reptile to the SPCA and the owner may claim it by calling 792-6973.
Buttes first air show since 1937 headlines Sundays Independence Day events at the Butte Airport 3 p.m. DST with a large parade Monday morning at 11. Sheriff Bill Dalling and Mayor Thomas Powers lead Butte Celebrations Inc. officials inviting Montanans to attend. Sen. Lee Metcalf and Rep. Arnold Olsen plan to attend the parade as participants from Anaconda Twin Bridges and other towns join in.
Harry Maurice Johnson 82 longtime superintendent of the Anaconda water works department and World War I Purple Heart veteran died Saturday at his home in Anaconda. Born June 25 1883 in Oswego New York he worked for the New York Central Railway then joined the BA and P Railway in 1906 advancing to head of traffic for the Anaconda Co. in 1908. He later served as Salt Lake City ore purchasing chief clerk before continuing in his career.
Butte Celebrations Inc officially announced the Independence and Vigilante days parade route and division assignments. The parade starts at 11 a.m. DST with entrants due in position by 10 o clock, entries in Divisions One and Two travel north on Main to Granite then east, Divisions Three and Four go north on Main to (Continued on page 2).
