Hundreds of out of town visitors are expected in Butte for the Mining City Fourth of July parade starting at 10 a.m. from West Granite near the courthouse. The city has been in a festive mood all week following the Vigilante Days Rodeo and a Wednesday free dance at Columbia Gardens.
Butte celebrates with a large parade entry list and a scheduled jet plane flyover from Malmstrom Air Force Base pending weather. A parachute jump exhibition at Butte Airport is tentatively planned for 3 p.m. Thursday. Mayor Donnelly leads Butte Celebrations Inc. committee with Vern Griffith as general chairman and a team of marshals. Float judging promises lavish prizes across four divisions and special awards for best decorated cars, with entries required at formation points by 9:30 a.m. and the parade marching at 10 o'clock.
The march begins at the courthouse at 10 o clock Thursday with a route through Granite Wyoming Broadway Montana Park Arizona Utah Front Harrison Majors to the Civic Center. Parade entries must be in formation by 9 30 Thursday morning per parade marshals.
Floyd Shaut of St. Johnsville New York died when his car collided with a New York Central train at a rural grade crossing near Blackmans Corners Utica Rome area. The National Safety Council estimated 535 deaths nationwide during the Independence weekend with typical victims aged 25 to 44 and rural travel.
Sidney Nebraska 15 year old Jon Discoe placed Fourth of July torpedoes in his pocket with candy balls. He popped one into his mouth already chewing and the ball exploded blasting part of a tooth and badly burning his mouth and inner cheek.
Iranian Red Cross chief Hossein Khatibi, visiting newsmen, estimated at least 1000 dead after Tuesday’s earthquake in northern Iran. He warned 4000 to 5000 injured and 50000 homeless as communications and rail lines hinder exact counts.
J Ryan Gaul aged 73, longtime manager of the Butte Division of Montana Power Co at retirement in 1942, died after an extended illness in Las Vegas. He lived in Butte over 40 years, worked 35 years for the firm, and was born April 2, 1884 in Houghton Michigan. He was nephew of John D Ryan, former head of The Anaconda Co. and Montana Power Co. He had moved between Las Vegas and Butte and Phoenix, with summers in Butte.
President Eisenhower urged that if another big nuclear test occurs any nation may witness the reduced fallout. He said advisers favor sharing how to make a clean bomb and reaffirmed the aim for a suspension of tests. He criticized Russell’s push for a nationwide vote on civil rights and said officials should decide legislation. He avoided firm stance on a $6 a ton steel price rise and noted questions remain about bill language.
The Butte City Council adopted an amendment to the traffic ordinance restricting parking within two blocks of the meter zone in the business district to two hours and outside that area to 30 minutes until the city limits. Five aldermen voted no with Dan Kinsella Alex McDonald J D Flynn Pete Sodja and Louis Lienemann opposed. Aldermen William B Renouard and Tom Carrig were absent. Captain James Roe of the fire department, after 37 years, was promoted to assistant fire chief at Harrison Avenue station, effective before his retirement in two months, with a larger pension. The council also approved required qualifications for police and fire department applicants.
More than 100 searchers include 15 sheriff's deputies 16 Explorer Scouts 10 church camp staff and a bloodhound scoured rough Judith Mountain north of Lewistown for 17 year old Robert Foster who vanished after hiking from a Southern Baptist Montana Association camp. Undersheriff Pat Wicherts said conflicting reports explain his disappearance as possible late return from a race or confusion over rock graffiti before he vanished.

The Fourth of July holiday falls on a Thursday so no regular Children’s Day program at Columbia Gardens this week. Harold Crain, 45, of 1716 B Street, was killed when a crumbling wall on the But trey’s store construction site at 2307 Harrison Avenue toppled in a gust of wind. He was trapped under heavy blocks as co workers on a bulldozer tried to flee the danger. Foreman Edwin Rudway and officers investigated the accident. Several workers escaped injury.
Montana weather outlook shows fair, warmer conditions with highs around 70 to 80 degrees in both east and west. East portion expects scattered afternoon thundershowers Friday, while the west may see more cloudiness and scattered storms with highs near 70 to 80. Overnight lows range from 45 to 55 degrees east and 50 to 55 degrees west.
A family of six lived at 807 S. Main when a fire destroyed their six room brick veneer home. Mr. and Mrs. George James and five children escaped unharmed after an exploding gasoline can sparked the blaze at 9 15 p m as Mrs. James lit the stove. Firefighters arrived with three engines and two lines, taking about thirty minutes to control the flames. Damage to furnishings was heavy with some items new that week. the building damage estimate was not available.
The Butte Post Office will close today with no mail deliveries except for specials and perishables. Postmaster Joseph E Parker announced Wednesday.
