Elk Park Man Struck by Auto Injuries Reported

Bridge collapse kills seven and injures forty at Cherokee river crossing
At Cherokee Indian Reservation steel cables failed on a 150 foot pedestrian bridge over the Oconaluftee River. Two women died identified as Mrs. Lawrence Rainwater of Atlanta and Mrs. Agnes Haile of Daisy Tennessee. About 40 were injured as passengers plunged into the river and many rushed to safety. Authorities cited possible faulty welding and noted 50 to 60 people were on the bridge when it collapsed.

Eight Die in Iowa City Two-Family Car Crash
Eight members of two families from Illinois and Iowa died in a two car collision 16 miles west of Iowa City Sunday night. One member of each family survived.
