Vast July Fourth parade in Butte resumes a wartime tribute to armed forces. Forming at 10 am on West Granite the procession covers downtown and residential areas with three bands six drum corps and many floats from business houses civic groups and volunteer fire departments.
President Truman’s Fourth of July statement appeals to the creed of liberty shared by the nation. He recalls independence 169 years ago and honors the fighting sons who helped defeat the enemy in Europe, with hope to soon crush the enemy in the Pacific and gratitude for divine guidance.
Four fleets of B 29s totaling between 450 and 500 planes struck four target cities on Honshu and Shikoku islands using nearly 3 000 tons of firebombs in predawn darkness. The strikes raise total sorties to 2 400 in nine days of incendiary bombing led by Maj. Gen. Curtis E. LeMay.

In the Philippines typhoon rains hinder the American mop-up on Luzon while American Dixie division troops and Pilipino guerrillas seize the Mindanao town of Waloe in the Agusan valley. Storms trigger landslides in northern Luzon as U S forces press patrols in the Cagayan valley and support ground operations with fighter bombers and light naval units against remaining Japanese forces.

American flyers virtually destroyed three Japanese headquarters near Changsha in central China in a coordinated air strike. The mission wrecked over 93 buildings, scattered troops, and hit 40 more buildings housing troops and staff seven miles east of Changsha. Additional targets east of Changsha leveled 43 buildings while a third HQ near Hengyan faced bombing.
London reports on July 3 that at the 228th station hospital in Sherbourne enlisted men will be served breakfast in bed by officers as part of Fourth of July celebrations. The day is called the enlisted man's day of independence by Lt. Col. J Kingsley MacDonald. Enlisted men will serve as officers for the day and a party will be held at the Officers' club at night.
American occupation forces rolled into Berlin on Tuesday amid wreckage and breadline scenes. Veterans in a 4,000-vehicle convoy reached the capital after an early start from Halle, with delays hampering the arrival of the U S Second Armored Division known as Hell on Wheels. Crowds showed tears and joy as Red Army traffic police saluted, while some Berliners remained silent and subdued.
Maxwell Bilofsky president of Industrial Electronics said he lent Elliott Roosevelt $50,000 in 1939 through David Baird with good collateral. He was repaid $20,800 after five $10,000 notes and 500 Texas State network shares. collateral liquidated for $10,800 in 1941 as Roosevelt joined the Army. Bilofsky saw no tax deduction for the loss.

London reports the Polish government in Warsaw has accepted the Yalta pledge of free and unfettered elections. A foreign office spokesman said official recognition by the United States and Britain is expected shortly, clearing the path for formal recognition.
