Butte marks its independence celebration as court proceedings conclude in the murder case of Mary Ryan. John Connolly delivers a verdict for Ryan, who is remanded to sheriff custody after a fatal highway incident near Elizabeth Warren and Harrison avenues.
Identification witnesses declare a sketch resembles the man who ravished and strangled three Inglewood California girls. Described as 30 to 40 years old, about 5 feet 10 inches, with a tattoo on the right forearm, wearing a tan shirt and blue denim trousers.
Foreign Secretary Eden declared Britain will not allow the Spanish Civil War to injure British interests and will cooperate on fair measures to avoid a European war. Three additional British battleships were dispatched to the Mediterranean as Spanish nationalist planes bombed near two British destroyers in the Bay of Biscay. Eden warned that Britain’s patience has limits amid anti British press attacks and Mussolini’s possible meddling. The Mediterranean remains Britain’s main arterial road, a stance unchanged by these events.
Boston debutante and daughter of a banker is a weekend guest at the Hyde Park Roosevelt estate. Joan Roosevelt, youngest son of the President, hosted her after attending the Franklin D. Roosevelt Ethel Du Pont wedding and several Harvard parties last spring.
Honolulu reports ongoing search for Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan after storms forced the search plane away. The Itasca bases at Howland Island and naval authorities order two destroyers and two aircraft tenders to patrol the area while pending dispatch of another long-distance plane. Weather includes high altitude snow and sleet. Howland lies near the equator about 50 miles from the equator.
In Chicago stockyards buyers paid top dollar as half hog alleys closed and supplies dwindled. Packers offered 12.50 per hundredweight for best hogs as hog prices surged to eight year highs. eastern markets showing around 13.0 per hundredweight.
Boise dispatch reports Mrs. John Boettiger, daughter of Franklin D. Roosevelt, removed her shoes during the long reception after the Du Pont Roose velt wedding as her gown hid her feet. She stood in line for hours and said only one reporter noticed. Separately a Canyon road fire near First National studios threatened homes of film figures including Alan Dinehart, drawing five fire companies and 45 firefighters.
Community dollar day in Butte planned for July 20 by the merchants committee of the Butte Chamber of Commerce. Stores will stage a gala bargain day with special sales and promotions announced by local merchants.
Colorado’s grasshopper war moves from mobilization to final phase with 110000 pounds of poison spread across nine counties. Sam C McCampbell says supplies are sufficient to sustain operations through the Fourth of July and beyond, as grasshoppers feeding on poison die.

Johnstown police reveal an attempted dynamite strike on a moving Pennsylvanian rail train serving Bethlehem Steel. Ernest Layton, 21, of Johnstown, confessed to tossing three sticks of dynamite with fuses lit under the train. the charges followed a prior strike action by Conemaugh Black Lick railroad workers.
Howland Island residents led by Christian Kamakaiwi wait for Amelia Earhart and her navigator after her plane fails to arrive as scheduled. They watch the sky from the coast as boats depart and hope against hope for a safe return.
