The state conference on drought emergency will meet in Havre on July 8 to discuss a WPA program for relief. The agency plans to seek an enlarged quota to place 6,000 men in dry regions on jobs at once.
Governor Holtz announces an emergency drought conference set for July 8 in Havre. State and federal officials will map a relief program and prepare a report for WPA head Harry Hopkins and Secretary Henry Wallace as northern and eastern counties face worsening conditions.
Montana’s main highways are reported in good condition for Fourth of July traffic. Drivers are urged to follow warning signs and flagger directions where construction is active. U S 2 ranges from the North Dakota line to six miles east of Kalispell with several detours and sections under construction.

Americans nationwide mark the 160th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence with fireworks and feasts, but actuarial estimates warn some 459 deaths from accidents. New York plans a 48 gun salute broadcast by NBC at 9 a.m. Mountain Standard Time.
A large crowd gathered on West Broadway in Butte for an open air Independence Day dance. Citizens of all backgrounds joined in, with costumes from many nations, a blend of minuet to Tin Pan Alley tunes, and festive lights and fireworks enhancing the street party.
A colorful parade fills Broadway as Old Father Independence and his many sons and daughters celebrate his 160th birthday. A. B. Cohen leads the Montana Pioneers and a Mines band through town while costumes range from matadores to cowboys amid a riotous crowd. Mayor Hauswirth’s appearance draws laughs as the day’s spectacle unfolds.
Thousands joined the Fourth of July celebration in Butte with a massive parade and street dance. Fireworks lit dawn to dusk as revelers packed the streets while homeowners enjoyed a festive mood. The note recalls the Declaration of Independence anniversary 160 years ago.
Fairbanks reports continued hot weather with temperatures near eighty degrees. Forest fires are beginning to rekindle in several areas as Alaska endures a heat wave.
Chamber executive committee reports a perfected plan to secure WPA funds for paving the Butte municipal airport runways. Washington WPA headquarters earmarked the funds awaiting final approval by Joe Parker and airport officials. They will meet in Helena next Tuesday to act.
One man, WPA worker Douglas Estabrooks of 2062 Harrison avenue, was shot in the left leg by an accidentally discharged gun and admitted to St. James hospital. Eight others were treated for firecracker injuries, with several more expected, including Edward Reece, Eva Burns, Dewey Landy, Billy Holland, Tom Sheehy, William Dolan, Bernice O’Boyle, and Tom Munro.
Four year old Margaret Bennett wandered into traffic near Murray Hospital on North Alaska Street and dashed toward her father who saw her as an auto approached. The incident occurred during last night's parade and the child sustained a serious head injury.
Forecaster predicts unsettled Saturday with thundershowers and cooler air in the eastern portions. Sunday should be generally fair with fresh to strong winds persisting in the east.
The Bureau of Mines reports Montana supplied 41 percent of domestic natural manganese ore, with Georgia 26 and Arkansas 15 forming 82 percent of U S shipments totaling 26 428 long tons. Montana produced 2 155 long tons of metallurgical ore and 7 264 long tons of battery ore, plus 6 818 tons of secondary ore.

A fire started by an abandoned camp fire burned a sixth of a Douglas fir stump land six miles south of Rocker on private ground near the forest reserve. Rangers found fireworks remnants and will prosecute violators in federal court. Humidity was low and temperatures high with brisk winds increasing fire risk.
