Butte residents expect an active Fourth with plenty of fun in the area. Fishing prospects are strong as rivers run low and clear from Lima to Butte. Weather forecasts promise ideal conditions, high steady barometer indicating pleasant skies for the holiday festivities at Columbia Gardens.
The 1928 balance of payments shows foreigners paying the United States 2.268 billion for goods and loans and the U.S. sending 2.288 billion abroad. Notable items include 1.109 billion in goods, 882 million interest, 210 million war debts, and 962 million loans abroad plus tourism and freight costs. The totals nearly balance amid small rounding gaps.

Directors include J C Ryan John Corette Ray Ruhle Dr J Thorkelson Tom Taylor Jr Al Torgerson and Burt Mooney with capital at 250 000.
After approving a move to use asphalt for the St. James hospital paving district the joint committee voted to study district sentiment further. Representatives of Elks Masons the school district St Patrick's church and St James hospital urged reinforced concrete. The group said they hold the majority property in the paving area.
Fire in Mill Valley California, fed by shifting winds and crown flames, burned over 20 square miles of timberland, destroyed 100 homes, left 500 people homeless, and caused about 1 million dollars in damage. Origin traced to a cigarette dropped from a train or car.
In Columbus Ohio on July 3 the Cleveland monoplane continued its flight to break the refueling endurance record. By 4:30 pm it passed 118 hours, and at 10:39 pm eastern time pilots Byron Newcomb and Roy Mitchell had reached 124 hours toward the 172 hours 31 minutes record as drizzle began and clouds formed.
Motorists and business men are urged to subscribe to the Harrison avenue paving fund. A meeting at the Butte Chamber of Commerce offices set a goal to finish by Saturday night. Chairman Fred Gamer called for public cooperation, noting committee members have as much at stake as any citizen.

A Burlington train with 300 passengers sped three miles at 50 mph after engineer Elmer Daugherty vanished from the cab. A coroner's jury blamed suicide, while Cassity the fireman said Daugherty likely fell ill and toppled. Cassity stopped the train. most riders were bound for the Pacific coast.
Gov. J. E. Erickson was adopted by the Crow Indian tribe at the fourth annual roundup in Crow territory, receiving the name Iron Eagle. Mrs. Charles Garnier Jr. of Livingston was also adopted and given the name Princess Little Doe for aiding the parade.
London July 3 United Press staff correspondent reports David Lloyd George, leader of the Liberal party with balance of power in the new parliament, urged the government to push definite steps toward global arms limitation and condemned the perceived perfection of earlier disarmament efforts.
An explosion at the Brian & Jensen Fireworks department in Omaha during Fourth of July preparations killed two men identified as Myron Jensen, son of proprietor J. P. Jensen, and Harry J. Jones, manager of the fireworks division. Bodies were severely burned and not easily recognizable. Continued on Page 3.
Butte city council unanimously ordered bids for Harrison avenue paving. Alderman Barry O Leary said public support already pours in and bids must be returned to the city clerk by 5 p m July 17. The funds needed to pave the stretch from Front street to Grand avenue are expected to be subscribed by then.
