Six Murderers Fail in San Quentin Escape Attempt
Six murderers on death row attempted an escape at San Quentin California days ago seizing two guards in bloody assaults and then giving up under tear gas as other guards stood by armed with submachine guns. Senate approves new version of Sugar Extension Act
The Senate backed a compromise Sugar Extension Act after renegotiations to appease Latin American partners in the Alliance for Progress. Argentina, Peru and the Dominican Republic objected to reduced shares in the U S sugar market. The bill reserves 235000 tons of annual sugar imports for these nations at presidential discretion with premium pricing. The old Sugar Act expired at midnight. H J Tobie Johnson of Walerville was sworn in Monday as a member of the Silver Bow County board of commissioners. He succeeds Frank Gersh who resigned June 30 after twelve years as a Democrat on the board. Johnson won the Democratic nomination over Gersh by about 6 000 to 4 800 in the June 5 primary and will serve the balance of Gersh term plus his own six year term starting next January.

Butte Prepares Extensive 4th of July Parade
The Butte Fourth of July Parade returns after years without celebration and will start at 10 a.m. from the courthouse. It will travel through the downtown business district along Harrison Avenue to Buttreys Store and then to the Civic Center, with many entrants and elaborate floats. Montana Soldier Fatally Stabbed in California Incident
Pvt. Clyde R. Morris 19 of Dodson Montana was fatally stabbed in Fort Ord California after an argument over a telephone booth. Pvt Cleo Cooper Jr of Wichita Kansas, a basic trainee, was held for investigation by military police.

Butte Police Force Suspects Car Tire Shots Halt 16 Year Old Thief
Police pursued a stolen car through Butte at speeds near 90 mph and fired six shots at the rear, puncturing two tires to stop a 16 year old fleeing youth. The 1959 model car belonged to Thomas E. Kelly of 1236 Steel. the youth had earlier stolen a 1955 model left on Steel.
