Secretary of the Treasury said the 1948 fiscal year surplus reached 3.416 billion dollars, the largest in history, noting it exceeds congressional accounting by about 3 billion. Congress redirected 2 billion to carry into 1949 as an advance credit for the European Recovery Program.
A pact for cattle brand inspection and rustling prevention was drawn up at the Western States Brand Conference in Dickinson North Dakota. W M Rasmussen secretary said the pact marks a step toward standardizing brands and rustling measures for the 16 western states. Representatives from the two Dakotas Wyoming Montana Washington Colorado Idaho and Nebraska attended.
A citywide celebration opens today with parades and street events across downtown Butte. A Copper League game between Borin Side Athletic Club and Butte Miners Union is set for Clark Park in the evening. A Montana war veteran, his English wife Edith and their 19 month old son Calvin were hurt Friday night when a stolen car crashed near Lafayette. Driver Richard Edwin Sauer, 47, of Chicago and New York City, admitted stealing the vehicle after taunting by fellow workers about a prior prison record.

An 18 year old former Hungarian divinity student Laszlo Varga was found guilty of first degree murder in the rape slaying of Mrs Billee Rahe Morning age 22, wife of a Wells Nevada Presbyterian minister. Jurors recommended death by Nevada gas chamber. Judge Taylor H Vines scheduled sentencing. The verdict followed a March 22 slaying in Wells Nevada.
Tension from the May 9 presidential vote turmoil led to shootings and clashes across Panama City. About ten people remained in hospitals Friday with injuries from the political rioting and related disturbances.
