Butte prepares a 48 hour Independence Day blitz of cheer and stunts as crowds pack streets for spontaneous entertainments. Archie McTaggart leads the masquerade parade along a set route with the Butte Mines band and saddle horses.
Peter Weiss, 72, a bearded prospector, was acquitted of Dr. Jasper Gattuccio murder after a 60 minute jury verdict in San Jose. A mob outside the county jail threatened retaliation, prompting Sheriff Lyle to deploy 14 deputies for Weiss’s safety as possible lynching fears lingered.
President Roosevelt met for three hours with Democratic leaders to outline a heavy campaigning agenda and a tentative budget for the summer. They discussed filling key campaign posts and war chest spending, with Farley signaling a figure near the 1932 level of about two million dollars.
Washington July 2 A three member board was named by General Malin Craig to pick a site for a new Alaska aviation base capable of handling 1000 planes. The move is described as partial execution of the Wilcox act. Sites for others will be announced later.
