Red release uncertainty after U S troop plane forced to land

A Seaboard World Airlines DC8 carrying 212 soldiers and sailors to Vietnam was intercepted by Soviet MiG fighters and forced to land on Stump Island in the Kuriles. The United States pressed for release through diplomats, but Soviet Premier Kosygin offered no assurance. The plane and occupants were reported undamaged and uninjured, with little detail available from Washington.

Non-nuclear treaty signed links U S and Soviet to curb arm race

President Johnson announced U S Soviet talks will begin soon on curbing the antimissile race as the Nonproliferation Treaty is signed at the White House. Fifty seven nations signed in Washington plus additional signers in Moscow and London. The treaty comes into force after ratification by forty nonnuclear states and the three sponsors. Senate leaders debate funding for the Sentinel antiballistic system as talks near.

Another U S plane hijacked into Cuba

Northwest Airlines flight 714 from Chicago to Miami was hijacked and diverted to Havana Cuba. The pilot radioed the hijack at 6 36 p m and the plane landed in Havana at 7 18 p m Local time. About 90 passengers were aboard. It followed another hijacking to Cuba earlier Monday involving a Southeast Airlines liner with 14 passengers returned to Key West.

Butteman Killed In Mountain Can Mine Incident

Lindin A Dobbins 55 of 1732 Thornton died after a fall at the Mountain Can Mine on the 4200 foot level. He slipped while working alone, jumped clear of falling timber, and struck his head, dying of a crushed skull and cerebral hemorrhage. Sayatovic-White's Funeral Home will host last rites Wednesday at 11 with burial at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Dobbins, born August 30, 1912 in Mott North Dakota, previously worked for Pierce Packing Co in Billings and served in the Navy starting in 1944.

Laurel native joins Standard State Bureau in Helena

Daniel J. Foley, 25, of Laurel, named to the Standard State Bureau. He served as information officer for the Army’s 1st Signal Brigade in Vietnam, later earning journalism degrees from UM and Northwestern. Foley is married to Lela Weggenman with two children and joins Jerry Holloran in state bureau coverage.

Old fire truck to join Butte parade on July 4

Butte Electric Fire Truck No. 1 to roll again in the July 4 parade after a 55 year layoff. Volunteers led by Dave Johns Ray Howe and Walter J. Neumann rebuilt the vehicle over six months in the Montana Power Co. garage. the restored truck features dual steering wheels and a 75 foot ladder. The unit, used around 1913 from Quartz Street station, was acquired by Charles Bovey of Virginia City and Great Falls in 1940 and shipped to Great Falls.

Marines crush North Vietnamese at Khe Sanh near siege site

U S Marines backed by air and artillery pummeled a North Vietnamese force near Khe Sanh in the northwest corner of South Vietnam. They said 157 enemy dead, 2 Marines killed and 11 wounded, and 71 enemy weapons captured.

Butte Holiday Program Opens With Concert Tonight

The Butte Municipal Band led by Ray Sims performs at Clark Park at 7 30 p m tonight. The concert launches the city wide celebration running July 11 13 with the Independence Day Parade set for Thursday at 10 00 a m and 80 plus entries including 25 floats. Other events include a pro boxing card at 8 00 p m and a free dance at 9 00 p m in Columbia Gardens.

Heavy smokers die sooner says health service report

The Public Health Service report to Congress states that heavy cigarette smoking shortens life by about eight years for young men. It links smoking to lung cancer in men and to heart disease, noting an increasing convergence of evidence. The secretary urges warnings on vending machines and ads, and supports stronger health wording on packages.
