Medicare began with a rapid rollout as thousands of patients aged 65 and older already in hospitals became beneficiaries at 12:01 a.m. A bookkeeping action shifted their bills to Medicare from July 1 for up to 90 days of benefits, subject to a $40 deductible.
U S planes pounded seven depots in North Viet Nam for the third straight day with all bombs reported on target and heavy smoke shrouding the areas. Dong Cham depot near Haiphong and other oil storage tanks were severely damaged as U S fighter bombers joined the raid from the carrier Constellation.
The National Safety Council warned the Independence Day weekend could see 510 to 610 traffic fatalities nationwide. About 91 million motor vehicles are registered, and travel may total 9.5 billion miles as millions hit the highways for recreation.

AP report says two men in a pickup were killed and six others injured in a crash involving a car and a pickup truck on U S Highway 89 south of Browning. Authorities noted the two truck occupants died from burns and could not be identified immediately.
Explorer payload launched toward the moon but ran too fast to enter lunar orbit. Officials described seven failed attempts over eight years and shifted to an Earth orbit to salvage science, signaling a future August lunar orbital plan with a camera satellite.
Federal Judge W D Murray found legal grounds to enjoin the Butte Miners Union and Mine Mill from interfering with Centennial Development Co of Utah’s work for Anaconda Co. The ruling cites no NLRB certification for bargaining with the Centennial firm and notes Centennial’s bargaining agent is the United Steelworkers. Further action and possible injunctions await next week.
Butte readies its annual Independence Day parade with 88 entries led by comarshals Vern Griffith and Bill Daley. The Viet Nam veterans will be honored alongside about 150 former Butte residents in a homecoming parade. Organizers seek convertible transport and warn against political advertising or undecorated vehicles.
Emmett Kelly the three term Silver Bow County public administrator resigned Friday effective immediately. Chairman Vera O Connell says the board will appoint an interim successor next week. applications are open. Kelly served since 1954 and his term ends this year.
In Fairfield Maine Carl Fisher discovers his wife Constance has drowned three children aged six four and nine months while she lies unconscious. The woman is charged with murder and held for grand jury action as authorities retrieve the other drowned children Kathleen Louise six and Michael Joan four from their home.
Showers and thundershowers expected through the week end in the Butte Anaconda region. Highs around 75 degrees today with a low near 48 tonight. A year ago in Butte the highs reached 73 and the lows 40. Weather chart on Page 2.
Pete Castellano, 52, of 1822 Sherman filed Friday for the Democratic nomination to a four year term as sheriff of Silver Bow County. He is the fifth to seek the party’s nomination this year and says he is a self funded candidate not obligated to anyone. His 1962 platform survives with focus on fair impartial treatment, school and child protection, around the clock law enforcement and youth recreation.
AP reports three leaders withdrew from the sixth Montana cross country Model T race leaving 25 cars for the final lap from Helena to Livingston. Norman Eberhardt of Cut Bank posted the best total time of nine hours five minutes and twelve seconds. The event began in Laurel with a Thursday night stop in Butte and proceeds through Missoula Lincoln and Fleshier Pass before Helena.
