Bodies of Two More Butte War Dead Being Returned

The Army announces the return of Lt. Holney Johnson and Pvt. Harold Ludha from England for reburial, among 22 Montanans aboard the Lawrence Victory. Johnson, a fighter pilot born 1923 in Hettinger, North Dakota, died Feb 10, 1945 near a Suffolk, England crash after leaving Montana State University and serving with the Eighth Air Force. Ludha, 19, son of Louis and Mrs. Lucha, died December 1943 in England while with Army engineers. The transport is due to dock in New York with a list of other Montana war dead aboard.

No Financial Drive by Peace Officers in Butte

Montana Sheriff and Peace Officers association does not sponsor a financial drive in Butte at this time. Secretary Willan Dalling said Thursday that inquiries about solicitors joining the Montana group have been made, but the local organization is not represented by solicitors contacting Butte residents.

Scouters Outline Camp Work Plan

Butte Montana Standard reports a July 2 1948 note on Camp Lowlands preparations. A committee led by George Iters Martha Menard and others schedules July 19 to Aug 7 activities with Temp lin as director in charge of waterfront and activities. Dudley assists with handicraft and commissary. other staff includes McGillvray Wainwright Hewitt Jac kard Boyle and Pe. Scouters plan a work session Saturday to prepare for opening.

Sisters Die On Trestle Tragedy In Boston

Two girls aged 12 and 14 were killed and a third injured when two freight trains traveling opposite directions trapped four youths on a Neponset river trestle near Boston. Virginia Lyons age 12 and Patricia Lyons age 14 were identified as the deceased.

Miss Gay Hoffman Is Honor Guest At Shower

Miss Gay Hoffman was honored at a bridal shower in Philipsburg on July 1. Mrs. Paul Heaney hosted at the parish hall with a pink and white peony decor. Prizes were awarded in pinochle whist and bridge to named attendees. more than 50 guests attended the event.

Lightning Strikes Butte Residence

The McCarty home at 1601 Nevada in Butte was struck by lightning while empty. A chimney and central roof section were torn away, lightning then entered a natural gas line and grounded. No fire damage occurred, though several nearby homes suffered wind-related damage.

Butte businessman and golfer Phil Carr arrives for his annual summer visit at the Leggat hotel. Butte Boy Scouts plan to march in the Independence celebration parade on Monday. Troop members are told to assemble in uniform at 9 30 o clock. A Brownie Girl Scout picnic occurred at Snell's Pond with leaders Mrs Forest Stuebe Mrs Ben Walkup and others. Americans read more newspapers per capita than other nations.

Emergency landing strains eastern flight halts at Atlanta

An Eastern Airlines flight from Miami to New York diverted to Atlanta on Thursday due to landing gear trouble. The plane carried 49 passengers who were kept on board after the landing and then continued their journey on other flights.
