Butte prepares for a three day Independence celebration with parades fireworks and contests. An expected 10 000 visitors join 40 000 residents for a weekend of pageantry comedy and entertainment ending Monday night.
London dispatch reports the British cabinet to convene Monday for an emergency session to decide on actions if the Spanish non intervention program collapses. Britain may drop the project, recognize both sides, and lift the arms and volunteers ban, undermining neutrality committee hopes.
The Montana Power company announced a new group life plan for all regular employees with six months on the payroll, including subsidiaries Glacier Production and Great Falls Townsite. About 1,500 workers will receive coverage from 1500 to 2100 dollars based on salary, with the company paying all premiums for the first month. The plan requires 75 percent acceptance to become permanent, with employees contributing 50 cents per month per thousand dollars of coverage. Louis Quisel, a Livingston substation operator, died suddenly five hours after the plan's launch, leaving a widow and four children. his death underscores the timing of the insurance rollout. The Metropolitan Life Insurance Company underwrites the policy.
William Ryan 38, a miner, testified in his murder trial that his wife Mary Ryan jumped from the car he was driving on Harrison Avenue Easter morning after he slowed to avoid a collision. Police could not determine the cause of the explosion.
In Canton Ohio an explosion ripped the back porch from a Republic Steel foreman's frame house, knocked the house off its foundation, and damaged three neighboring residences. Across the country in East Chicago Indiana nearly 12,500 mill workers celebrated a strike armistice with Inland Steel as Congress debated the government’s position in the 36 1/2 hour strike deadlock. The seven state strike has claimed lives and caused over 50 million dollars in wage and production losses. Representative Ditter of Pennsylvania urged President Roosevelt to issue a statement ending the turmoil.
