River tragedy at Missoula claims four from family reunion
At McNamara's Landing near Missoula a family reunion turned deadly when four children were swept away in the river. Rose Ann Elledge aged 15 from Deer Lodge, Terry Pesanti 12 from Twin Creeks, Michael Fitzpatrick 8 from Massachusetts, and John Fitzpatrick 26 of Twin Creeks died after helping others. A fisherman retrieved the children’s bodies downstream near McNamara's Bridge. The disappearance began when Mrs. Fitzpatrick dropped her sandal and Pesanti leaped in to recover it, followed by Michael Fitzpatrick and Rose Ann Elledge. John Fitzpatrick attempted to assist.

The Model T owners parade through Butte as part of a state timing race. Thirty three cars left Laurel at 8 a.m. and by 5:30 p.m. twenty arrived, some with trailer help, while others faced bearing or connecting rod failures. The 1916 entry Miss Los Angeles was sponsored by Fred Upshaw. Bill Walters heads the Montana Model T Association. The convoy plans to depart Butte at 7 a.m. for Anaconda and on to Missoula.

American planes hit Hanoi area again
U S jets bombed three fuel depots north of Hanoi in a new effort to cut off oil for North Viet Nam. Navy fliers also reported destroying three radar vans and 16 support buildings at Kep 38 miles northeast of Hanoi. A ground clash 530 miles north of Saigon left about 300 Communist troops dead. A helicopter crashed during takeoff near the Mill Creek Ranger Station four miles south of Livingston. Pilot Darrell Sucher of Chandler Arizona and passengers Hal L Brown of Livingston and William R Driver of Bozeman were treated for bruises and shock. Sucher may have back injuries. Brown and Driver are Forest Service employees surveying the area to be sprayed for spruce budworms. The craft, operated by Mountain West Helicopter Co. of Provo Utah, was destroyed after dropping about 150 feet.
