Viet Cong mortars attacked Da Nang Air Base in Vietnam early Thursday destroying three U S planes on the ground and wounding or killing personnel. An Air Force policeman was killed as about thirty 81 mm rounds struck the base, a key launch point at the time.
Congress approves a compromise bill setting a 100 dollar retail limit on duty free purchases by U S tourists returning from overseas. President Johnson signs the law before the deadline, saying it helps balance of payments by about 60 million annually. If not, the old 500 dollar wholesale value limit would return.
Chairman Daniel J. O Connell and Commissioner Gary F Gar rett approved Heisier J Korn of 1916 S Washington as airport manager. Korn was a blade operator in the county surveyor's road department and his appointment takes effect today. Hubert J Johnson did not vote on the appointment.
Senate Appropriations Committee boosted the Butte Federal Building remodel budget from 579000 to 611000 with plans to press for the increase through conferees after Senate action. The project will convert about 19000 square feet of postal space for agency use and court expansion, with GSA presenting the alteration proposal for the North Main building.
Robert Laird a 42 year old Butte resident died Wednesday afternoon in an accident at the Weed Concentrator. He climbed near the ore conveyor and his head was caught between the conveyor and steel I beams. Coroner Andy Aleksich said there will be no inquest. Survived by wife Marjorie Peterson Laird, parents Frank and Mrs Laird, siblings Ronald, Mrs Donald Williams and Mrs Kenneth Adair. Body at White's Funeral Home.
The House approved a four year 5.3 billion housing bill with a revised rent subsidy plan for some lower income families. The 245 to 169 vote marked an historic step praised by President Johnson who said the provisions would spur private builders to create integrated neighborhoods. Democrats trimmed eligibility and funding, while Republicans offered limited support. The measure survived a failed attempt to strip out the subsidy.
Butte marks Independence Day with a Friday start at 10 am and 1 pm sports programs at Clark Park, a 8 pm band concert, then a Columba Gardens Pavilion dance Saturday, an Sunday air show, and a Monday parade. Edward W Nelson administrative aide to Governor Tim Babcock was named executive secretary of the six unit Montana University System. The post includes secretary duties for the Board of Regents and starts with fiscal 1965 66. Nelson 39 formerly directed the state department of institutions and once budget director.
Washington AP report says Bobby Baker faced Senate Rules Committee charges of flagrant abuse of his patronage position to enrich himself. The committee urged possible indictment for conflict of interest involving the former page boy from Pickens, DC, while denying a separate payoff theory tied to Matthew McCloskey and the District stadium project for the 1960 Johnson campaign.

The University Name Game announces new titles for Montana system units. The University of Montana becomes the Montana University System while Montana State University Missoula becomes the University of Montana. Montana State College becomes Montana State University and two colleges drop “of education” from their names. Northern Montana College retains its name under a House Bill 18 that cleared both houses on the way to Governor Babock’s desk for Jan 25, 1965.
Gov. Tim Babcock urged the Montana Fish and Game Department to take over the Neighborhood Young Corps program after vetoing it when proposed by the Montana Farmers Union. He said qualified youths ages 16 to 21 could work year round in state parks fishing access sites and roadside camps as of July 1, with the State Parks Division under Fish and Game.
Ronald P. Richards, a former University of Montana faculty member and current U.S. Senate intern, will become executive secretary of the Montana Democratic party on October 1. His selection was approved by a special party committee, and he will base his headquarters in Helena after returning to Montana before the appointment deadline. Richards, a Mobridge South Dakota native, succeeds Dr. Joseph Kelly who resigned May 14 after serving since March 1963.
