Kennedy and Lopez Mateos seal new era of understanding

President Kennedy and Mexican leader Adolfo Lopez Mateos declared a new era of understanding and friendship during Kennedy's Mexico City visit. They pledged sovereign policy to avoid outside dictation and witnessed a $20 million Alliance for Progress farm aid loan signing.

Lewistown Man Walks From Wreck and Dies

Alfred Nelson, 53, of Lewistown died after walking from a one car crash on U S Highway 87 about 18 miles east of Lewistown. Police say the injury may have come from chest trauma after the car left the road and rolled 25 feet into water. Nelson’s watch stopped at 11 p.m. and the wreck likely happened between 9 p.m. Friday and early Saturday. The incident raised Montana’s 1962 toll to 93.

Butte Celebrates Uncle Sam With 4th Parade And Parties

Butte plans a nationwide Fourth of July celebration with a 10 am patriotic parade featuring entries from Anaconda Helena Bozeman and Twin Bridges and a jet flyover from Malmstrom Air Base Great Falls. The event honors the nation’s 186th birthday and Philadelphia signing while showcasing rededication to American ideals along with a Civic Center fight card dance at Columbia Gardens and a bicycle rodeo at the Civic Center. Bill Daly and Lester Frank will marshal the parade.

Second Fugitive Surrenders Here

The second fugitive of a three man escape group surrendered at the county jail Friday night. The youths were being taken to the State Industrial School after fleeing from a state official convoy Tuesday. The first surrender occurred at noon Friday. Police link two auto thefts in Butte to the trio, with vehicles found in the Highlands and Helena.

Father Burns 44 Dies After Illness Funeral Tuesday

The Rev. George Burns longtime St. John the Evangelist assistant pastor died Saturday after a several week illness. His body lies at Duggan Merrill Mortuary then moves to St. John church for viewing Monday afternoon. Office of the Dead at 11 30 a m and solemn requiem mass at noon Tuesday burial in the Priests Plot St Patrick Cemetery. He was born July 24 1917 to late Robert and Mrs Burns, longtime Butte residents. He attended St Mary grade school and Butte High School.

Storms Bring Scattered Showers Across Butte Area

Partly cloudy today through Monday with scattered afternoon thundershowers. Highs around 78 today, 80 to 90 Sunday and Monday. East of Divide mostly south portion sees showers. cooler west portion Sunday. West of Divide partly cloudy with a few showers Sunday through Sunday night. The table notes 12 hour maximums, 18 hour minimums, and 24 hour precipitation ending at 5 p.m. MST Saturday.

Montana Power Co. workers strike after failed talks

International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 44 struck Montana Power Co at 12 01 a m Sunday. The 325 employees cover Montana wide systems as linesmen electricians and others. Supervisors will run facilities while unions lines form. Negotiations with Bob McClelland failed to resolve the wage dispute prompting the stop. The strike marks Montana Power’s first system wide walkout in 50 years.

Montana Power Company and IBEW Strike Statements Released

Officials of Montana Power Company and Local 44 IBEW issued statements after the union announced a strike to begin at 12 midnight. The company claimed its wage offer of a 10 cent per hour increase retroactive to May 1 plus an extra raise exceeds local industrial patterns.

Benny Reynolds Wins Butte Rodeo All Around Title

Benny Reynolds, America's top cowboy, won the 31st annual Butte rodeo all around championship, earning 1002.40 dollars for multiple events. He led in bull riding, tied for second in bareback bronc, and won steer wrestling and saddle bronc as 4,200 seats sold out amid a hailstorm and showers.

Mine-Mill Union In Washington Accepts Offer

In Washington the Grandview Mine and Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers union reach a five cent per hour wage increase. The contract runs through July 1 1963 and covers Grandview Mine owned by American Zinc Lead and Smelting Co. In Salt Lake City Kennecott Copper Corp raises its offer to unions to 22.5 cents over two years with 6,750 workers represented. unions seek at least 10 cents more. No strike imminent as talks continue.
