Senate agrees to a July Fourth recess and conference leaders cut the unemployment relief bill’s public works program from 500 million to about 300 million. Norbeck and Secretary Mills sign off on treasury flexibility as the measure moves toward December consideration.
In Flemington New Jersey the defense motion for a directed verdict of acquittal in the John Hughes Curtis case was denied. The state rested its case in the Lindbergh baby kidnapping murder investigation and Curtis was described as a questioned ally in pursuing the culprits. The report notes Lindbergh questioned why all these lies amid his faith in Curtis.
Chicago July 1. The battle for the Democratic nomination raged as Roosevelt failed on three ballots to reach two thirds. Farley pressed on with secret errands while claims of progress and plans to woo Garner spread. Rumors tied Byrd and McAdoo to the ticket as New York politics and Walker’s fate loomed large.
In Lausanne delegates indicate no definite settlement yet and plan a formula tying reparations to U S aid for debt relief of former allies. Germany’s position remains unclear as Chancellor Von Papen weighs acceptance.
The mercury reached 88 degrees at 3 pm under overcast skies in Butte. Barometer trends suggested rising temperatures and sultry conditions with thunderstorms forecast within 12 hours. Yesterday’s high was 88 and the 24 hour low was 49.
Washington reports the Senate receded from a 200000 appropriation to extend the northern trans continental air route from the Twin Cities to Seattle. Butte Chamber of Commerce pressed to include Butte as a stop, citing its airport. With curtailment in Washington, completion of the line is delayed and plans may be abandoned.
Lieut. Col. Thomas J. Dickson retired army chaplain died at Walter Reed hospital in Washington at age 65.
Textile stores will close every Saturday in July and August at 1 p.m. starting July 9, ending the week with a half holiday. The change affects textile shops but not foodstuff stores, following a long standing agreement between employers and clerks.
A collision with the tanker Seminole caused the four masted bark Melbourne to sink off Fastnet. Eleven crewmen died and fifteen were saved from the grain laden ship bound for Australia.

Five cent gasoline tax collections in Montana for the fiscal year ended yesterday totaled 3,553,687 dollars, 390,986 less than the previous year. June receipts were 367,471 dollars versus 380,339 in 1931 and 371,669 in May 1932.
Roosevelt campaign manager James A. Farley predicts delegates backing New York governor Roosevelt would stick to him to the end. Chicago dispatches report Farley calling a leaders conference to canvass the nomination, with Illinois and New York still on the fence and preballoting odds fluctuating from 5 to 1 to 7 to 1 against Roosevelt.
Blind and snow haired Dr Edwin Grant Frost retires today at age 65 from the position of director of the University of Chicago's Yerkes Observatory in Lake Geneva Wisconsin on July 1.
