Millions across the nation celebrate Franklin D. Roosevelts birthday while supporting the Warm Springs foundation for infantile paralysis. Donations surge from cities, stores, saloons, and factories totaling at least 2 million dollars with gifts including cakes and telegrams.
About 30 000 Montanans joined Roosevelt fete with receipts from dances card parties and cake sales totaling an estimated 12 000 to 20 000. Proceeds will fund Warm Springs infantile paralysis charity and St. Vincent's hospital in Billings. Highlights include Missoula nearly 2 000 attendance and over 1 500 receipts, Lewistown 600 attendance and 250 receipts, Bozeman 400 net, Billings 800 attendance and 700 net, Great Falls with five orchestras and 600 receipts, Helena 500 couples and 700 in receipts.
A unidentified man, 55 to 60 years old, was found dead with the scalp missing near Birch Creek in Dubois Idaho. The body, estimated to have died two or three weeks earlier, was discovered by sheepherder Bill Geddis and later moved to Dubois by Sheriff Harry Rayner.
The House approved the largest naval building program ever authorized, with a cost of 475 million dollars over five years. The Vinson treaty navy bill calls for 102 new fighting ships, raising total U S Navy strength to 240 ships by 1939, complemented by improved warfare design since 1919.
The United States government assumes title to all monetary gold held by the federal reserve banks after President Roosevelt signs the gold bill. Morgenthau says gold holdings rise to 4.03 billion dollars at 20.67 an ounce, with 2 billion to form a stabilization fund. A 60 percent gold content plan could lift treasury value by over 2.6 billion.
A Nor thern storm leaving 28 dead and millions in damage swept from New England to the Atlantic as subzero conditions eased in the Middle West. Northfield Vermont posted 22 below zero at 7 a m while upper Great Lakes read 10 to 20 below. In Buenos Aires a 103 degree heat wave marked one of the year's hottest days. Denver reports January weather records shattered by mild conditions.
Nearly 500 applications for 1934 automobile licenses were filed at the county treasurer’s office yesterday. Three continuous lines formed before the tellers’ windows and more than twenty applicants were referred to the Deer Lodge office. Total applications to date reached 2,190.
Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions in the eastern region while the western portion may see rain or snow. Colder air is expected east of the Divide on Wednesday, with unsettled conditions continuing into Thursday.
One hundred sixty eight students at the State University filed for degrees to be awarded at the close of the spring quarter. Seventy one pursue certificates to teach, with names including Alfred Dahlberg Dwight Eld erkin Jane Adams Eleanor Fredrickson Helene Spencer Betty Kelleher and others from Butte and Anaconda.
Helena January 30 The state liquor stores and control board limit individual sales to three and three fourths gallons after internal revenue guidance that a $25 annual tax would apply to each retail store and $100 to each wholesale store Attorney General Raymond T Nagle notes the tax would be challenged and Montana may sue the statute. He says changes in liquor laws since 1905 justify differing conditions and that the Supreme Court decision was not unanimous.
Mr and Mrs Vincent Regan of 1013 Oregon Avenue welcomed a seven pound eight ounce boy at St James hospital. The child will bear the name Franklin Roosevelt Regan and was born on the president’s birthday. Mother and baby are reported doing nicely.
George McDowell a Duluth deputy sheriff visits Butte noting unusually warm weather and snowless conditions. He arrived to escort George Ekel to Duluth where Ekel is held on a statutory assault charge.
At the Montana Wool Growers' convention in Billings on January 30 speakers urged lasting prosperity through permanent ranges and flock adjustments to market demand. Grover Lewis called for lower range costs and affordable leases, criticizing bidding for state grazing lands and proposing converting submarginal lands in southeastern Montana into ranges as part of a broader government planning program.
Fifty two Butte Boy Scouts were recommended for promotion at a monthly board of review. Awards will be issued February 13 during the court of honor tied to National Boy Scout week. The list includes Star Ray McCall, Second class holders like Robert Blake and Jack Elderkin, First class recipients such as Jack Garells and Kenneth Kall, with merit badges noted for First class recipient Joe.
Butte marked the fifty second birthday of President Franklin D Roosevelt with two large halls packed and a grand parade. Senator T J Walker and Dr T J B Shanley led the events at the Winter Garden and Temple ballroom with prizes, window sales, and ticket sales exceeding 2000.
Butte and Walkerville registrations for the March 19 primary will end at 5 pm tomorrow, says John Holland clerk and recorder. Voters who moved must transfer registration, and those who did not vote in November must re register to vote in the coming elections.
Walter T. Bridges, state director of the national re employment service, urged county bureaus to pattern after Silver Bow’s unit at a regional meeting. More than 100 representatives from Silver Bow and neighboring counties attended with labor, veteran and civic groups.
