A miner turned lawman he served as undersheriff to John Lloyd and sheriff of Silver Bow County in 1892 and 1894 then as penitentiary warden before returning to mining for Boston Montana Co. He led militia units in Virginia City and Butte and belonged to multiple fraternal orders. His funeral at midnight followed Scottish Rite Freemasonry rites with body lying in state at St George Hall and a procession to Mount Moriah Cemetery.
