Paralyzing cold struck Butte as a Arctic high swept from the Northeast bringing sub zero readings. The 24 hour low fell to 18 degrees below zero citywide and 13 below in the business district. Snow blanketed five inches before midnight. planes were grounded though trains and roads remained passable with the cold expected to intensify.
Senate and House conferees report a farm bill compromise raising checks for small farmers while capping yearly benefits. The plan allows up to $10,000 per state for individuals and partnerships farming in multiple states, with a national $10,000 limit for corporations. Sugar growers remain under separate rules.
Chinese forces report gains on the Lunghai line in lower Shantung. They say they drove Japanese from Mengyin and trapped another unit at Tsining, with 200 Japanese reported dead in Mengyin. Japanese spokesmen admit Chinese progress toward Tsining.
Olaf Ulland the Norwegian ski ace dominated the two day Anaconda championships on Oimoen hill despite icy patches and heavy snow. He scored 213 points on jumps of 122 and 109 feet to win the Smelter city championship and leads toward Montana records if weather allows.
Residents of Bannack Montana and surrounding area protest the planned closing of the Bannack post office this week. A local census counts 125 residents in the community with 89 living in Bannack. the post office is one of the oldest in the state, dating from the 1860s.
The Montana School Boards association plans its annual convention in Butte on February 18 and 19 with about 200 state officials expected. The Butte board of trustees No. 1 oversees venue details, while topics include transportation and teachers retirement laws, school funding, sales tax, trustee duties for on campus accidents, and adult and nursery education.
A large segment of American business denounces a proposed federal licensing system for interstate corporations and questions industry’s ability to meet President Roosevelt’s price and wage policies. The Chamber of Commerce reports the stance, arguing licensing should not govern employment conditions.
Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions on Sunday and Monday with warmer highs on Monday. No precipitation is expected and temperatures trend upward across the state.
Helena January 29 The Montana liquor control board closed a three day session without awarding bids for insurance contracts. Board members stated another meeting will be held early February to award the contracts.
A head on collision near Wolf Creek 35 miles north of Helena killed Earl Richards of Chinook and Mrs Doris Brockway of Great Falls. Injured were Phyllis Cherry and Edna May Brockway, both of Great Falls, with Cherry listed critical and Brockway serious. Highway patrol said Richards car was on the left side when the crash occurred.
A group of young Butte enthusiasts aided Tom Johns after a ski crash near the Nine Mile. He broke his right leg and was carried a half mile to a bus then to St. James hospital. Doctors praised the rescue as wise and brave. R E Benson assisted.
St Clairsville Ohio after Teddy the town dog was impounded for lacking a license. Mayor and residents rally as 790 students hold a mass meeting and pledges to back Teddy’s release fill the day. Next week Chronicle edition to cover Teddy’s case.
Tokyo reports say Ambassador Grew delivered U S representations to Foreign Minister Hirota over the slapping of Consul John M Allison by a Japanese sentry at Nanking The notice mentions a promised thorough investigation and a wartime concern over Luzon gunboat damage as ministers seek an early Haijan conference outcome.
President Roosevelt praises the American people for backing the national drive against infantile paralysis. The report notes a Roosevelt birthday ball in Warm Springs supporting the campaign and the Warm Springs sanitarium receiving funds. A crash near Flagstaff Arizona involved a Vultee aircraft with Mrs Vultee aboard, flames consuming the plane near Oak Creek canyon.
Two railroad tank cars loaded with kerosene rolled into Alexander Klebonis's grill in Schenectady New York waking him from bed. He escaped uninjured as Acting Deputy Fire Chief Edward Moffett said the accident occurred while cars were being switched to a siding near the grill.
Madrid reports say the Spanish government repelled insurgent counter-offensives to hold Teruel, with observers noting entrenched lines along the Teruel salient after the second drive to recapture failed. Casualty figures remain unconfirmed, but both sides used crack troops and advanced weapons.

Montana gains 1000 WPA workers as announced by Works Progress Administrator Joseph E. Parker. The statewide total reaches 16 265, with Senator Wheeler confirming the January quota rise to meet relief needs in Great Falls and Butte.
