Washington reports the 1933-34 deficit neared the Hoover level as final steps began to implement the new gold program after President Roosevelt signs the monetary bill. Morgenthau said he was comfortable about the outlook and ready to start operating the stabilization fund.
Billings Jan 29 The secretary of state Sam W Mitchell was operated on at midnight for a ruptured gangrenous appendix. The physician reported he was in good spirits though fever 103 and pulse 100 with his condition still dangerous. Mrs Mitchell and their son arrived today.
Washington January 29 Relief Administrator Hopkins announced an additional $300,000 grant to Montana for emergency relief work in January. The funds support disaster recovery and aid efforts overseen by state authorities and federal programs.
Butte prepares for a large Roosevelt birthday ball as the city hosts the event in the Masonic temple ballroom and Winter Garden with a potential Knights of Columbus venue if overflow occurs. Dance begins at 9 pm after a 7 pm labor parade from the courthouse and 6:30 assembly. CWA workers are urged to attend and ticket sales have surged.
Finances public domain and markets loom large as the Montana Wool Growers association meets for its thirty third annual session in Billings. Hungary and Danubian nations reach probable peace terms as Russia’s export season nears end with about 235 million bushels shipped. Big Four delegates see progress though Russian quota not discussed.
Nation endures a wide cold wave with many areas below zero. New England faces colder outlook while Chicago records seven degrees below zero. fires in icy weather claim several lives and 10,000 CWA workers remain idle on forest projects as Minnesota begins relief.
Montana forecast calls for generally fair conditions Tuesday and Wednesday with mild temperatures. An unsettled western portion may see rain or snow on Wednesday.
Washington plans to move hundreds of thousands of unemployed from coal districts to zones with new opportunities. The Federal Surplus Relief Corporation will lead, using a $25 million starter for sub marginal lands purchases. Hopkins says a committee is near final recommendations and the program aims to shift populations in districts where mining has closed and jobs disappeared. He notes families on relief face bleak futures and prospects vary from relocation to work in other regions.

Vinita Oklahoma January 29. Indian philosopher Bill Katfraid shares a humorous tale about a man named Skalock whose wife mistakenly fears a child has swallowed ink. The story ends with Skalook suggesting they write with a lead pencil as a remedy to the moment.
Berlin observes the first anniversary of Hitler and the Nazi rise to power with public speeches in the Reichstag and schools. Torchlight processions and church services were noted in previous celebrations, while today no extreme jubilation is planned.
In Butte Chinatown a tong notice exiled a member, posted on a community board with unseen signatories. The charges date back 35 years and cite trust violations and embezzlement, warning Chinese to beware in business matters.
London reports Britain will publish a memorandum showing its stance in the disarmament talks. Foreign Secretary Sir John Simon announced the move in Parliament as diplomats in several capitals received the document. Early talk suggests Britain leans toward Germany and may meet Hitler’s demands partly.

Martin Walsh well known Butte miner died last Friday. Relatives notified included his sister Mrs Pete Kelly of New Jersey who subsequently inquired about funeral arrangements. Two hours later another message announced Mrs Kelly had died. Funeral services were held at his home 2219 Princeton Avenue with a requiem high mass at St Ann’s Church celebrated by Rev M J Leonard. The junior choir sang the responses and pallbearers were Tony Carney Bob Halloran Thomas Madlin Thomas Gannon Mike Durkin and Mike Higgins.
J A Campbell 74 of Deer Lodge was killed instantly when a .22 rifle discharged while he crawled under a fence on his ranch. Sheriff Boedecker ruled the death accidental. Campbell, born in Indiana, moved to Montana in 1909 and later ranched near Deer Lodge with his wife, who was recovering from shock.
