A US Air Force T39 trainer with Lt. Col. Gerald K. Hannaford and Captains John F. Lorraine and Donald G. Millard disappeared after entering East German airspace from Wiesbaden. Radar showed two high speed contacts. radio contact failed and search focused between Frankfurt and Karlsruhe.

Soviet proposal calls for scrap of bombers by all nations

At the 17 nation disarmament conference in Geneva the Soviet Union proposed that all nations, led by the United States and the USSR, destroy their bomber forces. The United States rejected the plan as impractical, while backing a parallel destruction of nuclear weapon carrying obsolete bombers. Tsarapkin said the measure would ultimately affect all states. Secretary Rusk approached Moscow but no immediate reply was given.

US to Retire Over 100 Early ICBMs

The United States plans to retire more than 100 vulnerable Atlas and Titan intercontinental ballistic missiles in the next fiscal year. Defense Secretary McNamara told the House Armed Services Committee that newer solid fuel Minuteman ICBMs are expanding, reducing the need for the aging D and E Atlas missiles. Fifty four D and E Atlas missiles at five bases in California Wyoming Nebraska Washington and Kansas are affected.

Kennedy warns LBJ war may erupt in Malaysia

UPI reports Atty. Gen. Robert F. Kennedy told President Johnson the Malaysia dispute could spill into war without a peace at the table. He said the United States has treaty commitments in the area and urged UN involvement if needed. Kennedy said a failed peace conference could widen fighting and draw other nations.

Butte Chamber Pleads for Eastside Rest Area

Butte Chamber of Commerce leaders urged the Montana Highway Commission to place a rest area on the east side near the Interstate Y where interstates 1815 and 1890 converge. They proposed relocating an information booth to the new site to assist travelers and encourage them to stop in Butte. The commission showed cautious interest but indicated no immediate decision.

Panama seeks emergency OAS session over canal dispute

Panama plans an emergency meeting of the Organization of American States to address its canal dispute with the United States. A call to activate the OAS organ of consultation is expected within 36 hours, requiring at least 14 of 21 members to approve. The Inter-American Peace Committee notes Panama requested a 10 a.m. Wednesday meeting, though no formal session was scheduled.

Humpbacked bandit robs Butte bar for 200 dollars

A 25 to 30 year old man with a pronounced hump robbed Corner Bar at closing time in Butte early Tuesday, taking about 200 dollars from the cash register. He fled after taxi pickup and delaying help by cutting the phone line, leaving a 5 9, 170 pound, clean shaven man in a dark cowboy hat and black leather jacket. Monte Miller, the bartender, identified the suspect, who has not yet been arrested.
