After the Chillan earthquake the only viable option to free thousands buried in debris was seen as burning the ruins. Officials estimated up to 20,000 dead in Chillan and at least 24,000 in the stricken area with Concepcion and smaller towns heavily affected.
The Senate backed a $725,000,000 emergency relief bill with broad limits on using federal funds for politics. It returns to the House for its amendments and restrictions, signaling no chance to raise funding to the $875,000,000 requested by Roosevelt. A key addition bars WPA roll reductions beyond 5 percent in February and March.
Helena reports three Montana House members plan to introduce a bill granting women jury service. Bills favoring female jurors have failed in prior sessions. The trio named are Mrs. Marian A. Mrs. Gertrude Peterson celebrated her 100th birthday on January 27 in Hamilton. Born January 27, 1839 in Mo Norway she lived in Klatskanie Oregon before moving to Montana in 1926. Her daughter Mrs. V. O. Blood cares for her in her upstairs room.
The Butte Housing Authority plans to file aanvraag for $900000 with the United States Housing Authority in Washington to build about 200 low cost homes. An executive director will be appointed soon and preliminary work will begin after $2500 is raised locally for survey and planning.

The insurgents claimed control of key industrial centers and communications hub Granollers, encircling western defense and threatening inland pockets as the civil war widens.
Butte police obtain a full description of a suspect described as the world’s meanest man. The candidate, aided by vigilantes, is said to be well off, drives a car, dresses neatly, holds a responsible job, and reads a lot.
