Pioneer Steamboat Captain on Missouri and Yellowstone Dies
BISMARCK N D Jan 28 Capt Isaac P Baker 82 veteran Missouri river steamboat captain died today after a fall in September. He led the last fleet on the upper Missouri, once banker in Bismarck and in 1871 Democratic national committeeman for North Dakota. Baker helped run the Benton line from 1882 and earlier steamboat Alexander Kendall on Yellowstone and upper Missouri. He received the war bonnet and was named Mato Wankantu High Bear by local Indians in 1923. His fleet carried buffalo hides robes pemmican furs and gold dust in the late 1800s.
