Rioting and gunfire flood the West Side as looters steal from a stalled semitrailer and hijack semi trailers. A 10 year old girl Delores Miller is killed during clashes with police and looters while dozens are arrested. Police surge into the area and the city cancels days off as the expressway and Outer Drive close.
A flash fire on a 200 foot Apollo rocket at Cape Kennedy killed Air Force Lt. Col. Virgil I. Grissom and two others during a full scale simulation of the February 21 launch. The accident occurred at 6 31 p m EST as the trio conducted tests atop the rocket in readiness for a planned 14 day orbital mission.
President Johnson and Vice President Humphrey mourn three NASA astronauts Virgil Grissom Edward White II and Roger Chaffee. They vow renewed drive in manned space flight and honor the fallen as the nation grieves and faces forward. Senators and representatives share shock and sympathy as defense and NASA officials extend condolences to families.
