Soldiers of the U S 9th Division escort Viet Cong suspects through a swamp near a river about 25 miles east south east of Saigon. After questioning, suspects were released or handed over to Vietnamese authorities.
A federal panel will hear union and company representatives next Tuesday in Washington to seek a settlement to the six month old copper strike affecting about 60,000 workers in over 20 companies. Panel members include George Reedy and Rt. Rev. Higgins, with support from AFL-CIO official Joseph Molony and Asst. Sec. Walter Hamilton.
President Johnson outlined a dual path of diplomacy and military alert after North Korea seized the USS Pueblo. He said U.S. forces are prepared for any contingency while urging the UN to press North Korea to return the ship and crew. The Security Council debated the crisis, with the Soviet Union backing North Korea and the United States urging action.
Negotiators for Butte Teamsters Local 2 and Anaconda Copper Company met in Butte on copper local issues in a 196 day dispute. The Great Northern Northern Pacific Burlington and Spokane Portland and Seattle merged after the ICC approval on November 10 and similar deals have been made with 20 other employee groups.
London AP reports the Israeli submarine Dakar is missing in the eastern Mediterranean about 100 miles west of Cyprus. The British Admiralty said an international search has begun. The submarine typically carries 65 crew members and there was no immediate sign of hostile action by Egyptian forces.
Thirteen applications were filed with School Dist No 1 for the physical education and athletic director post left open by Sam Jankovich who resigned January 9 to join Washington State University. Names of local applicants were not released. The deadline passed Thursday. interviews are set for Monday night at the School Administration Building, with a possible board decision that night or later. Jankovich earned 11500 under a one year contract. the board has offered a similar term starting July 1 with salary to be determined by qualifications.
Seven men were arrested in Seattle accused of a bizarre plot to dynamite a police station and a power plant to divert police before attempting to rob four suburban banks. The FBI tied several arrestees to the Minutemen anti Communist group. bail ranged from 500 to 30000 dollars.
Clerk Peggy Long reports a gun point robbery at Holm Grocery in Butte. Stanley Roberts and Clifford Ruetter, both under 25, fled with about $40 as officers widen the search beyond southwestern Montana. Long, shaken by the incident, later identified the suspects after medical treatment.
A Soviet intelligence gathering ship named Gidrolog appears amid a U S task force that includes the aircraft carrier Enterprise, the Truxton frigate, and four destroyers patrolling the southern Sea of Japan near South Korea. The group stands ready for any action in the Pueblo crisis.
