A building on Broadway in New York collapsed on Thursday, killing at least one man, injuring several, and trapping some beneath rubble as rescuers worked at the scene.
A powerful winter storm paralyzed the Midwest with heavy snow, strong winds, and ice. Illinois towns reported drifts eight feet deep, multiple power outages, and school closings as airports and roads faced disruptions. A 1335 foot TV tower collapsed in Fifthian and a Crete Monee High School gym roof gave way after eight inches of snow.

A combat parachute jump aided a helicopter assault by 1st Air Cavalry as forces moved inland toward the cave fortress.
