Moon Shot Off Course in Ranger III Moon Mission
NASA announced Ranger III aimed to reach the moon but missed by 20 000 to 30 000 miles. The Atlas Agena rocket launched from Cape Canaveral at 3 30 p m EST and would enter solar orbit after an initial success followed by a late near miss. The mission sought lunar imagery for future manned landings and marked the closest approach to the moon by the United States.

Sgt. William A. Ozanne, 33, a native of Butte and Navy veteran, died Thursday night in a one car wreck on a curve near Yakima Washington. Details were not received by relatives.
