Speedy Action on Naval Bills Sought

Washington January 26 Senate to begin ship week with calls for swift action on four naval bills totaling 1.35 billion dollars for ships armament and personnel. Measures include 909 million for 400 small ships 300 million to strengthen defenses 315 million to fund 200 cargo hulls and a 651 rise in midshipmen at Annapolis to grow officer corps.

Six Die When Auto Is Hit by Train in Dalton

A family of five and a woman companion were killed Sunday when their car was struck by a Chicago Miami passenger train of the Southern railway inside Dalton city limits. The dead are Ivan Ledford 27 his wife 24 and their three children aged two to seven. The unidentified woman companion also died. The Ledfords lived in Ellijay Georgia about 25 miles from Dalton.

Turkey Prepares Istanbul Mock Air War Across City

Istanbul will stage January 28 to 31 the most extensive air raid drill in its history with siren alarms and traffic shutdowns. State Memorial to Be Sought

Helena Montana January 26 An effort to build a 250000 pioneers and veterans memorial on the capitol grounds will be proposed in a bill to the state Legislature this week. Sponsors include the Society of Sons and Daughters of Montana Pioneers and the state veterans memorial fund commission. The bill will likely be introduced by the House military affairs committee chaired by Rep. Clifford of Deer Lodge. No new taxes will be needed for construction which will also house the state historical library and war relics.

Butte police searched Sunday for a thief who robbed the Shanty bar after closing, stealing between 400 and 500 dollars in cash and several checks. The black iron box with daily receipts was missing, and bar employees suspected someone was locked in after hours.

Butte Country Club Charts Promising Season With New Grass Course

At a Saturday night annual meeting Butte Country Club outlined plans for a strong season. W A O Kelly was elected president, Oscar Peterson vice president, E J Nash treasurer and Eugene Savage secretary. The new grass course, under construction two years, will open this season. The club reported solid finances and a membership gain as it hosted the state golf tournament attracting a strong field.
