Donald Richberg former NRA administrator urged revision of anti trust laws to allow greater self regulation by business under government supervision. He argued government and business must cooperate for free enterprise and free government to survive. He proposed legislative action to curb monopolistic and unfair practices.
The Bannack postoffice in Montana, one of the oldest in the state, was closed by the Postoffice Department. Mail for Bannack residents will be distributed in Dillon and delivered by star route. Residents plan a petition to re establish the post office.
Saco Maine January 26. School Superintendent Harry M Ross ends a seven day strike by Saco high school students protesting the board of education refusal to renew his contract. Deputies guarded a district meeting where petitions to reinstate Ross were presented. the board took no action.
Dr A L Strand Montana State College president addressed Silver Bow area council Boy Scouts of America leaders at the Finlen hotel banquet. He praised Boy and Girl Scout activities American Legion ballclubs playgrounds and public health improvements as fundamental Montana gains in 25 years.
John L. Lewis said the C I O unions will join the American Federation of Labor next week if AFL accepts them as they stand. As an alternative he offered to take all AFL locals if needed, signaling possible quick consolidation amid integration talks.
Activity in Chinatown signals the coming New Year. The celebration falls on Monday January 31 1938, marking the 27th year of the New Chinese Republic and the 2489th year of Confucius. Chinese homes plan open houses and prepare rare foods such as soaked anguila bottom fish as part of galas.

About five hundred representatives of little business will convene in Washington on February 2 to frame complaints against New Deal policies and draft plans to boost trade. Secretary Roper and Ernest Draper will join in, with 10 to 12 visitors chosen to present the case to President Roosevelt. Republicans criticized Roosevelt’s briefing on wage cuts, linking it to a stock market drop.
Partly cloudy conditions expected across Montana on Thursday and Friday with cooler air settling in the north central portion. The forecast calls for light winds and no significant precipitation.
The Montana automobile death toll for the year reached six with two fatalities in the eastern region. C. N. Schrunk a 40 year old Miles City taxi driver died after the car he rode in plunged over a 10 foot bankment near Huntley and his wife Rae Schrunk 47 is hospitalized with injuries. Sam Gunderson 51 was found dead two miles south of Circle following the crash.
Roy A. McCready, a junior at the Montana School of Mines in Butte, is named the 1938-39 Mary Westervelt scholarship recipient from the Women’s Auxiliary to the A I M E. The award marks the ninth straight year a MT mine student has won one of the five annual scholarships for study in mining metallurgy or geology.
